Just want to raise awareness about GP prescriptions, and in my case…cream. GP prescribed oilatum Junior cream for my boy as I thought his skin seemed a little dry. He started reacting, little spots all around the neck that became itchy and would sting after scratching, he would SCREAM when having a bath or when I’m drying his neck. He’s a chubby baby so at first I thought he just hated me going through his neck rolls. I was unsure and when it worsened I took a step back and changed how I bathed him, what I used to wash his clothes and even changed the type of bibs he used. When I took him to the GP they said “eczema” and prescribed the Oilatum bath Additive. Same symptoms. I decided to check the ingredients for the cream… different types of alcohol and preservatives that were labelled as “may cause allergic/local skin reactions or irritation, eg contact dermatitis”…these were also found in the bath additive. Obviously I stopped using it immediately and observed the changes. He’s doing a lot better, the itchiness has hard to deal with as I have to stop him from scratching and hurting himself but he’s improving. What works for some babies may not work for others. This is not a rant but just a post to be mindful of the products we use for our babies that are deemed as “safe”.

I experienced the exact same! Never used oilatum again. I found most things have alcohol in. We ended up just using coconut oil for moisturising and oats in a sock for the bath until my son grew out of it

That’s so unfortunate! You would think they’d be more mindful when it comes to baby products

Our poor LO has eczema too. Seems like there are many types of eczema and what works for one baby might not for another so you have to try out a few different products, but less is more. We’ve settled on quick bath twice a week with a bit of E45 bath oil - it only has 3 ingredients.

That is a safe amount and is generally used to preserve things so they last longer. For most people and baby’s this wouldn’t cause an issue whatsoever so people shouldn’t be put off but your little one is obviously a little more sensitive by the sounds of it.
