I’m looking at nursery sets but can’t decide whether to buy a normal kids furniture set or a nursery set with a changing unit. I’ve spoken to a few parents that have said they never used their changing units and said they would buy a normal cheat of drawers next time as they used their changing Mats on the floor etc. What’s your thoughts?

I think it probably depends on your space/home set-up. Personally I am having a changing unit with the drawers in our little girls nursery for ease of changes in the night/early morning and getting her changed up there.
We’ll then have a changing mat and nappy caddy downstairs in our main living area. I’m also having a c-section so wouldn’t want to rely on having to use just a mat on the floor and lower surfaces in the early weeks.

That’s a very good point about potential c-section that I hadn’t thought about, thank you! Height would be easier if that was the case especially during the night x

I was thinking about a changing unit but we don't have tonnes of space and the NHS says the safest place to change a baby is on the floor (ie they can't fall off). If I have a c section my partner will have to do the changing 😂

Another good point! So hard to decide what to do, thinking about all this stuff is overwhelming!

We didn’t get a change table with my first we just used changing mat on top of a large chest of drawers
and we used it all the time up until a few weeks ago as my partner really struggled with changing baby on the floor.

We’ve been looking at drawers with just a mat / nest on top but I do get a bit worried we’ll choose the wrong height! The other option we’ve looked at is one of the moveable changers - so it fits on top of the drawers and / or the cot, then can be removed. Totally agree it’s so overwhelming 🙃

thank you all good ideas, I’ll look into them :)

I’ve just got a changing table from ikea that changes into a desk when they get older so it’s multi use

I have first put a deposit down for a 3 pcs nursery set, then all the parents I know said I wouldn't use all of it, nit really worth it...
So I got my deposit back, bought a chest of 6 drawers from Ikea - a changing basket. I am hapoy with this set up as it saves so much space 😊

nice! I like the changing basket idea. :) x

If you have gone with a normal set of drawers, did you buy matching wardrobe and cot? I need inspo and where to buy from :) X

I skipped the wardrobe thing, got a big enough chest of 6 drawers (white), got a crib in natural wooden colour.
To match both items, we changed the drawers handles to wooden knobs and it looks great

I know it is nice to hang the cute outfits in the wardrobe.. But I personally thought I won't really need it, can just hang the cutest outfit for the day on shelving unit... where the changing mat area is (if I wanted to)

I didn't get the wardrobe, and personally didn't miss out on not using it. I bought a chest of draws (with the changing mat unit ontop of it if you choose to use it).

For my 1st we repurposed everything in the house:
-My working standing table became good height changing table for my tall husbands side vs vertically mum n me 🤣
Used this until he rolled too much then switched to floor.
Now i cant always bend down alot so i change toddler on his open sided toddler cot with a changing mattress under him.
- my husbands teenage cupboard got cleaned out and organised into baby clothes. Hanging rails barely needed and top shelf was too deep. So i got a hanging internal cloth shelf on the hanging rail so the most used clothes went on that. Used this until last month when 2.5 yr old now has bigger ikea pax cupboard than my wardrobe and matching chest of drawers!
- we didnt buy a cot as we borrowed bedside snuzpod. We then bed shared or had travel cot mattress on floor for a while before we finally got a toddler cot at 8 months
- for 2nd baby will get extra changing table by adding a fence to my own chest of drawers

Would have loved it if we could just repurpose stuff in the house! We just got a good deal on a Little Acorn set, storage is really important to us so we chose a wardrobe with lots of shelves / rails, and the bed transforms. Plus the moveable changing unit so that can just be removed when baby gets too big (or if they don’t like it). As I said we also looked at buying seperate but right now an ‘all in decision’ is just better for our mental state!

totally get that, it just feels a relief to get something ticked off the list. I have looked at little acorn sets too x

Never saw the point in a changing unit personally, all night changes were done on the bed and we have a changing mat (I had a c-section). glad I didn’t waste money on one and won’t be getting one this time either x

We bought a nursery furniture set from mamas & papas for our first, which included cotbed, full sized wardrobe & set of draws with a removable changing top. It’s all been great, I would highly recommend. We never really used the changing top to be honest, so I don’t think we’ll put it back on for this baby. At night I changed her on our bed, on a changing mat and during the day on the table, again with changing mat - I also had a section so couldn’t get on the floor to do it. The only thing I would say if you’re going to buy a nursery furniture set, is defo get a full size wardrobe. That was the one thing I was adamant on, I don’t get the point of kids sized wardrobe, unless you’re short on space x
