I’ve had intrusive thoughts most of my life and distraction techniques really help me. The thought still happens but instead of dwelling on it or trying to rationalise it don’t give it the space just immediately distract yourself. It’s basic but trying to think of something you can see, something you can taste, something you can hear and something you can smell, that is often enough to get your mind away from it x
My good friend has suffered with intrusive thoughts and found some self management to techniques helped ( like distraction already mentioned) as well as puzzles, podcasts and music. They also used sertraline prescribed by the GP to help manage the thoughts when they struggled. It seems to be quite common, reach out and get support xxx
Thank you ladies xx
I had really, really bad intrusive thoughts when mine was first born. I would never do anything, ever, but they scared the **** out of me. I read online that apparently these thoughts are your brain's way of protecting your baby. If you're thinking about it, you're also thinking of ways to prevent it and being aware of these things. That really helped me because I genuinely thought something was wrong with me.
I get this aswell, I don’t really get it about hurting my baby (I do occasionally and it makes me feel horrible) but mostly about other things and people hurting him.
@Laura of they do don't they. She's my first born as well so that explains a lot xx
@Millie got it's horrible isn't it. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Keep going we've got this xx
Our emotions and hormones are such a mess. Does sound really upsetting but try not to punish yourself. I’d speak to your health visitor. They are there to help you and work with you. 🩷
