Hi all,
I often hear people saying they want the name of their second child to "match" or "go well together" with the name of their first child.
And I always wonder about this:
- How do you decide if a name "sounds good" together?
Like, when I hear the names of my brother, sister and me they automatically go together as we are siblings and I don't know better. So in some way I feel like it doesn't matter what name you choose for a second child, it will always match as they are siblings.
So how do you decide if a name goes well with each other?
What makes them "sound right together"?
Why do you feel like names need to go well together?
Just looking to understand as I just cannot wrap my head around it at this timeš«£

actually i wanna know this too! i don't understand why people do it when the kids will not exist as a unit their entire lives lol

We didn't really match them but we wanted unusual names.
I also didn't want names that could be shortened.

Its when names have the same amount of letters, or the same vibe, or the same theme. For example someone who likes modern unusual names will stick to this type of vibe. Or older vintage sounding names. Or flower names or earthy names, etc.

I think theres a few things. Maybe that they dont sound too similar or drastically different. Some combinations just sound good to the ear the same way a picture looks good to different people.
Like my sons name is Jaxson and I am naming my future daughter and originally liked Juliet but together kinda sounds like jack and jill. We are hoping to go with Jaxson and Brooklyn. š¤·āāļøš name picking is so hard

I just think names with a similar vibe sound better together. Like traditional names or more unusual names or names from a different country. Like Fernando, Lorenzo and Dennis just sounds a bit off

Oh wow I don't think I every thought about "matching siblings names" I think it didn't dawn on me since me and my 5 siblings all start with the letter M. Both my boys have names inspired by bands my husband and I are fans of. Bruce and Rowan.

We sort of matched ours. We named my daughter Arabella which was for a specific reason and then when we were deciding the name of our second daughter, we decided we wanted another A name so we went with Athena

Ok so I have Niko, Mateoā¦. I need a third boy name!

It probably does depend on your personal associations with names but there are lots of associations many of us will have in common. For example sage and juniper are modern nature word names, Jessica and Jennifer are 80s girl names, Thomas and William are timeless traditional boys names. it can feel incongruous if you name one child Fox and the other child Elizabeth. Fox and Juno or Elizabeth and Matthew make better pairs. Personally since my husband and I both have longer 3 syllable names with easy short forms we decided to keep that going with our children. I think subconsciously it reinforces that we are cohesive a family. Of course that wonāt always matter but I need some way of narrowing down all the names I like anyways

Niko, Matteo, & Tiago
Niko, Matteo, & Diego
Niko, Matteo, & Oslo
Niko, Matteo, & Theo
Niko, Matteo, & Sandro
Niko, Matteo, & Otto

Canāt really pinpoint names that do match but I can definitely find names that donāt. Like Chad and theodora or sally and Constantine

I go with that has the same amount of letters. We struggled to name our first son so we decided to name our boy after his father, Octavio. Iām now 33 weeks pregnant with baby #2 due in December (another boy). His name will be Leonardo. If we decide to have a third baby and itās a girl, her name will be Catalina but with a āKā.
Octavio, Leonardo and Katalina all sounds like it flows together.

I unintentionally have two kids with cheese names. š¬

I donāt like alliterative naming, I think itās weird & tacky, but each to their own yanno
But I do understand wanting names to flow when spoken together or being within the same vibe / theme as eachother.
I personally name my children based on what my child ends up looking like the first time I see them. I try to ask my child about the names I immediately have come to mind when I look at em, and make it a collaborative effort. And I believe names are supposed to be very individualized identifiers so I wonāt really base it off the kids names I already chose more so than like not duplicating names LMFAO

ha Iām racking my brain for cheese names and can only come up with Brie?! š
Edam is also kinda cute! Lester? Like Red Leicester š¤·š½āāļø
At least they match and who doesnāt like cheese š

For me itās mostly about saying them together - āhere are my kids, name and nameā and I donāt want a mouthful or a tongue twister to trip over. Thereās a rhythm there that needs to feel natural.
But also a vibe thing like said - my husbands family all has extremely French names.. except aunt Brenda. And it makes me giggle every time because where on earth did Brenda come from?

I just picked the names I loved. Matching or not

I have a Brielle "Brie" and a Maverick which turns out is a cheese made from cashews lol.

Aha lol havenāt heard of Maverick cheese but sounds interesting!

I never did either till my dad sent me a picture of one at some organic grocery store. š¤£
