Tell him that he died and explain that small mammals have short life expectancies. After a short while ask if he’d like another with the understanding that it might not live long.

We only had the hamster for 4 months it was still a baby, so they live around 2-3 years but we only had him for 4 months, I’m just not sure he will understand that

My son was 3 when our hamster died. I explained he had died and he understood.
He asked to see him which I wasn't sure about but I let him and I think that helped him to understand.

Be factual but simple. His body stopped working and he died and that means we can’t see him anymore. You can say he got sick, I would just be sure to emphasize that it’s not the same as when he gets sick or when his family get sick, because you could take medicine or go to the doctor and you get better if you’re sick. But the sickness the hamster had was different and that means his body can’t work anymore and he can’t come back.

Our dog died this summer when my son was a little over 2.5 and he does still talk about her and is sad at times but it doesn’t impact him going about his day or anything. And honestly of course as sad as we are about our dog I think it can help young kids build empathy.

Just wanted to add.. make sure the hamster actually IS dead. When we were kids my aunt decided to get her kids a hamster just because we had one. Well apparently the hamster “died” and they quickly put it in a shoe box and buried it… the hamster wasn’t dead, it was hibernating🤦🏽‍♀️

He was definitely dead, his body was stiff there was no breathing movements at all and his paws were cold

thank you, it’s really hard to have to tell him as he’s been obsessed with the hamster

Have the hamsters toes gone purple? If not I would say it's not dead and more in a state of TorPor. Please make sure as torpor is a state of hibernation and many think there hamster has died but they're not. Unfortunately if you got the hamster from pets at home there life expectancy is a lot less then from a breeder due to over breeding. Having had hamsters for years, i won't be having any while my child is young because some live years and other live for not long at all.

I know it's not the same but my husbands dad has recently passed and my daughter is only 15 months. We've told her he's gone to sleep for a very long time.

Yeah I would tell him the hamster died. You don't have to go into detail, just keep it simple.

We lost a lot of pets growing up as kids (lived in the country...lots of critters).

We always held a little service for the animal/pet, and that helped us process the loss as we got old enough to understand what death really meant.

I'm not sure a 3 year old will be able to fully understand the concept, but he certainly will understand that the hamster is gone. I would do a little service for the hamster so your son understands why the hamster is gone.

But you know your son best. I think it's usually best to be honest, and answer any questions he has.

That their batteries will be off forever.

I told him that he got really poorly and he fell asleep and because he was so poorly he can’t wake up anymore. He is very upset though and keeps asking me to wake him up I just say I can’t wake him up as he has died now
