Gaviscon

My little boy has been on SMA althera since he was a few weeks old (he’s 3 mo now) and has recently started with reflux. GP prescribed infant gaviscon but baby just absolutely won’t take it and turns his nose up at it when mixed in with his formula. Is there any other way to give it him or to get him to take it as he really does need it he’s spitting up a lot through the day and can barely keep a feed down 😭

Something that was recommeded to us was adding a tiny bit, a cap full to start, of vanilla extract (not essence and make sure it's not got alcohol in which some do) makes it more palatable. This can then be reduced gradually until they get used to it. It worked for my little boy but some people don't like to add anything extra. Another recommendation was to gradually add the gaviscon a bit at a time so they dont notice the difference in taste. Put 1/4 of a sachet in their bottles day one, then 1/3 day two, 1/2 day 3, 2/3 day four etc until they are on the full dose. The other option is to just persist with it. They will get used to it eventually but it takes a few days of persisting to get used to the taste. Also, gavison thickens the milk making it harder to come out of the bottle so you might need a bigger teet size.

Gaviscon and althera are a nightmare together, sludge city for us - we gave it either in the last 10ml of milk, or neat in the teat at the end of a feed. This was suggested on nicu but obviously not what it says on the back of the packet.

@Jo I might have to try adding it gradually he’s usually not fussy at all but he gets frustrated easily when his milk isn’t coming out fast enough we use the size 2 mam teats right now but we might have to try bigger thanks!

@Vic would we just have to mix it with some boiled water to give it neat? We have the powder satchets and it says on the back for breastfed babies to mix it with water and give neat we just don’t want to make him more upset 🥲

@Holly tbh we mix it into neocate so might be slightly different. He wasn't bad with the gavison but this is how we got him to drink the neocate too as it tastes disgusting!

@Holly I think the breastfeeding instructions are close to what we do. We always burp before giving too
