My almost 2 year old has started to get really interested in dads coffee (it’s caffeinated so he can’t have it for a good long while) but that’s made me wonder what age they need to be to try/for decaf black? Is it the same age as caffeinated?

I’m not sure about decaf coffee but my little one has decaf tea every now and again which I’m sure is similar?

My child has had regular tea quite a bit before we realized it has caffeine in it 🤦🏻♀️😂

Decaf still has caffeine. It’s not a habit I would start until teenage years at least

I gave my kids sips of my regular coffee at like 3. Is there a reason they shouldn't? They are 8, 10, 13 now so it's been a while

Decaf is still caffeinated. My son likes to sneak a sip or two of my coffee when he gets the chance 🤦🏻♀️ He’s now 5 and doesn’t do it anymore.

it’s advised against because it can negatively affect their moods, sleep, heart, etc

They only have milk, water and watered down juice.
Every other drink is spicy 👹
In an 8oz decaf coffee there’s only 2mg of caffeine whereas caffeinated has 91mg. We will probably just hold off all together until they’re in their teens though. Our son has only had water (and cows milk starting at 12m) since he could drink something other than formula and we don’t do fruit juice even diluted down cause I didn’t want to add any more sugar content to his diet since he gets a decent amount of natural sugars with all the fruits and berries he eats (and plus he gets the fiber and other nutrients with the fruits that the fruit juice doesn’t provide) and even juices with no added sugar in them provide a lot more sugar than the fruit he eats without those added nutritional benefits.
The only thing he gets as a once in a while treat to drink is a slushie made with blended real fruit strawberries.
Was just trying to explore any other options for him 🥲 but it’s probably best we just stick to water, cows milk, and his occasional slushies for now.

because it has caffeine in it 😏

My parents gave me "coffee" to have with them every morning as a kid....it was milk with a tiny splash of coffee but I turned out just fine lol

I have a really bad caffeine addiction that I don’t want to pass onto my kids. I wouldn’t give them anything with caffeine in it personally.

You could do “babycino” a little steamed milk in an espresso cup to make them feel like they get coffee

My kid isnt interested in coffee yet but I wouldn't worry about giving him a little decaf, especially if it's watered down with milk. I mean, chocolate has about as much caffeine content as decaf coffee.

My daughter has had a ton of full caf coffee lol

I’m curious how young children could like drinking coffee I would think it tastes too bitter

My son loves to smell my coffee. Probably a bad sign for the future. I thought he wanted to drink it but he just likes to smell things 🤷🏻♀️ I would not have let him drink it. My wonderful husband gave him a small sip of cherry coke and I was so mad and he swiped my iced tea once

Why would you give your kid coffee or tea? I’m not judging but that’s never even crossed my mind

This is very cultural. I had instant coffee with milk (cafe con leche) before school almost every morning. Instant coffee has much lower caffeine content than regular brewed coffee and I was fine. For what that’s worth.

My 3.5 year old hasn't even tried a fizzy drink yet so I definitely won't be giving him coffee. Most of the time he just had water, and milk before bed. Just because a child is interested doesn't mean you need to let them try it
it can be cultural like someone below had said and used to they’d give the ok at 6 months 😅 obviously that was not good so that’s not a thing anymore but probably explains why some people’s parents or grandparents gave them coffee at a young age “well we used to have coffee as infants/toddlers and you’re __ years old so it should be fine!”
I’ve never actually seriously considered giving him coffee or even tea since it’s all got caffeine in it but him showing interest in dad’s coffee got me wondering about decaf and then I noticed I couldn’t get a definitive answer on decaf age and just regular black coffee which is a recommendation on being at least 12-14 years old. After looking into it and knowing that chocolate basically has the same amount of caffeine in it as decaf we are just gonna hold off as long as we can on caffeine and sugar as long as we can (gonna avoid fizzy drinks and juices for as long as we can as well).
I think just about everyone knows just because a child shows interest in something doesn’t mean you let them try it, I certainly know that, that’s why I haven’t given him any, nor anything else but water, milk and a slushie every once in a blue moon with crushed/pureed strawberry in it as a treat. I know some people give it culturally (like some cultures allow drinking/taking sips of alcohol at a young age) and others just don’t know because it USED to be okay starting at 6 months and that’s gone down the generations despite it no longer being given the okay even remotely close to that age for quite a long time.
Chocolate has caffeine in it too (plus sugar) which is why we also avoid giving him chocolate and have avoided giving him all around sweets in general (except 1 small mini candy at Halloween) and opt for fruits instead as something artificially sweet. He’s not big on sweets since we introduced veggies first for a while and haven’t given him many artificallysweet things
