I've had pets all my life. Loved cats. Had a Doberman and a little pomeranian poodle mix, I don't hate animals at all.
I HATE people who are pushy about their animals. I tell my kids they can say hi to dogs by waving from a distance and we never ever approach one. If we see one on a walk we step aside and they say hello doggy. And people usually just pass us by. No issue. Well we have a few neighbors with pits or pit mixes and my kids do the same thing they always do, hello doggy and step aside. "Oh you can pet him!" No sir they can't. I don't want them thinking they can approach any dog assuming it's friendly, they're only two.
"Oh she loves kids. You can give her a hug!"
No.
"My dog is hypoallergenic!"
No.
"He'll be so sad if you don't pet him!"
NO.
Jesus Christ I don't care about your animal, I care about my human children not being mauled because they mistook a poorly trained animal for a friendly one. Little kids don't understand. My daughter cries in stores because there are dogs that bark at her that people call their fur babies or their ESAs and it's just really ticking me off.
OK I'm off my soap box.

Learn more about our guidelines.I guess my problem is a cat can scratch or bite, a dog can too, and I've seen so many cable TV court shows about dog bites and it's ALWAYS my dog has never done that before!
It wouldn't annoy me so much if people didn't undermine me in front of my kids. Like I'll tell them they did great saying hi, now let's move out of the way~ and the owner argues they can pet them. I'll politely tell them that's so kind, but no thank you. And it's a straight passive aggressive argument like oh they're allergic? Yeah sure allergies. Well my dog doesn't shed. Fantastic, but they need to learn to avoid animals until they're old enough to understa--- but my dog is such a sweetie.
Aaarrrrrgggh!

"Its not your particular dog. My kids need to learn caution around unfamiliar animals. Thanks. "

As a dog owner and lover:
1. Thank you for teaching your children to respect other people’s dogs
2. I’m sorry for the people who guilt you for protecting your children (and, technically, their dogs! Because any dog can change their behavior and it’s never considered a child’s fault if a dog acts out of character).
Make sure you say everything you just said here to them. They shouldn’t be encouraging (or rather guilting) anyone to touch their pet.
