baby not chubby/chunky

hi my baby is over 1 month and she isn’t chubby she’s on formula NAN comfort and drinking 3-4 hours 90ml’s not sure why she’s not chubby she was born a month early was 36+4 and also preemie. Please any tips my partner keeps saying I’m not feeding her well and she’s not chubby.
please help me out that’s my little girl.
How much should I be feeding her idk if I’m not feeding her well everything is so so new to me and I am a first time mum with my first daughter. She’s weighing 2.7kg at the moment. She is a tall baby that plays a role perhaps.i have no idea..
Looking back at it i was also born preemie below the scale.

Our little boy was 4 days late and has never been chubby/chunky and has always been small for his age. Some babies are just different! It's nothing to worry about as long as they are gaining weight 😊

Avatar

I think the right answer is probably as much as she'll drink. You can try offering more or more frequently but it's up to her if she'll take it.

But remember, all babies are different. My baby was born big and always a big chunk, my friends baby is much smaller but developmentally more advanced than him. As long as your pediatrician isn't concerned I wouldn't be.

partner keeps saying she’s not chubby idk what I’m doing wrong she is gaining weight according to the baby nurse scales. But still wants baby to be chubby idk like u said every baby is different he says she’s weak for some reason which makes me disappointed I’m not doing well.cause I’m feeding her formula

Your partner needs to get educated and stop spewing nonsense. This would piss me off. She was born a month early, it's perfectly normal if she's on the scale. He should just be grateful she's healthy!

Avatar

yeah I just can’t with men like I’m feeding her obviously I mean she was 2kg when she was born.

Avatar

she is a talk little girl so maybe that plays a role in her weight as well she’s very long like her dad lol

Avatar

So she's gained! Doctors only get concerned if a baby isn't gaining at all or very little. Take him to the next doctor's appointment so he can hear for himself

Avatar

yeah will do thank you so much.

she also is a tall baby maybe that explain abit about her weight

My baby was born 37+2 and on the small side. She was also very skinny, especially at 1 month, but thankfully, she gained more weight as she got a little older!

Just like adults, babies all have different body types, and some are chubbier and some skinnier. It doesn't mean one is healthier than the other.

You can't force feed your baby more than she needs! You should tell your partner to stop it with the negativity and show you what you're doing wrong if he knows so much???!!!! Like take over if he thinks he can do a better job!

Of course, her mama doesn't want her to go hungry or be weak! You're doing all the right things, lovely! If the doctors are not concerned, then you shouldn't be either! X

I mean my last nurse visit baby nurse said baby has gained but not as much as she should’ve expected and she also said to feed her 90ml every 3 hours or 4hrs I also feel like baby getting rest and sleep is important

My baby was full term and only 6th percentile, she took a little while to get going but by 2-3months she was 80th percentile. I’m not saying you need to aim for that percentile, only that in the first 4-6weeks she absolutely didn’t look chubby and there was nothing wrong, completely healthy. As the others have said, listen to the drs/nurses and take your partner along. It’s not about the way they look, more that they are gaining and are alert/healthy. Hang in there.

Avatar

like I’m not concerned cause even little weight gain is a relief.but people in sydney will be like your not feeding her well but she was born a month early which explains alot and is also. A tall baby. Like her dad

Avatar

my baby is 5 weeks over a month now

Avatar

she’s alert and loves the noises and also she’s starting to open her eyes wide now. She’s healthy she didn’t need any oxygen or anything while out of delivery. She’s healthy coped well. Didn’t even need to be on heart rate monitor she got discharged from hospital quite quickly within 2/3 weeks

Get her weighed regularly and if weight gain continued to be too slow, ask to be referred for that to be investigated. It could be that baby has a tongue tie that makes it hard for her to take as much milk as she needs, or it could be that there is a health issue meaning she’s not taking the nutrition that she should from the milk.

Regarding the bottles, does she finish 90ml regularly? If so, start offering 120ml each time and see if she will take a bit more per feed. She could need more because of her height.

Avatar

yeah I gave her 120 ml and nurse said to reduce it to 90ml as she said it might be too much for her not sure

My daughter was born a "normal" weight at 39+1 weeks. She's breastfed on demand and has been gaining weight rapidly but it wasn't until she was about 3.5-4 months old that she actually started looking "chunky". She's also tall (91st percentile for height) and that plays a role in weight distribution. some babies don't ever get that "chunky" look and it's totally normal! As long as her pediatrician isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either, and your partner can stuff it

Avatar

yeah I think being tall plays a big role

Avatar

Babies can’t overfeed - if they take too much milk they’ll sick it back up again. So if baby can comfortably take 120ml without being sick I’d give that. It’s really strange advice from the nurse to offer less milk if baby isn’t gaining enough weight. It might be worth asking for clarification or a second opinion.

Avatar

yeah I’m gonna try feeding milk and as a mother I know how much to give baby and if she’s hungry or not the nurse says to give her 90 mls every 3 hours which is less for her

My daughter is 15 pounds at 1 year. Born at 39 weeks and was 5 pounds. I was worried about her growing but the doctor was never worried so I stopped worrying. And she’s a HUGE eater. So don’t stress mama, every baby is different and she’s long like you said.

Avatar

Yeah my baby is 8 months and 24lbs and my friends baby is 2 years and...24lbs 😂 both are healthy boys 😊

Avatar

My first was skinny, drank a good amount but only gained just enough for drs to be ok. My second was chubby and ate the same amount. They are 3 & 5 now and my first is still so skinny. He eats a lot so I’m not worried, I think it’s just his composition. As long as she’s gaining some and drs aren’t worried I wouldn’t worry either. If your health professional is worried about the weight gain, may be time to look into allergies?

Avatar

my baby nurse said that my daughter is gaining weight but not as expected but also she said to give her less milk from 120ml to 90 in 3-4 hours which is odd cause she gained while being on more milk.

Avatar

None of my kids were or are chunky, they've all always been skinny kids.
As long as she's gaining weight and her doctor isn't worried about her weight she's absolutely fine and you're doing great. All babies and kids are different, some are just naturally smaller and that's totally normal.
Have your partner go with you to her next appointment and ask the doctor about her weight and if you should be concerned. If the doctor says you're doing fine hopefully that stops your partner commenting on it any further.

My boy was only gaining a little, not what was expected but still gaining. After speaking to multiple drs that is fine. He was also growing taller, so if the drs aren’t measuring that (most don’t except on milestones) I would measure yourself for peace of mind. Regarding feeding, I believe in following their queues.

My son took smaller amounts more frequently 90 ml every 3 hours or so and my daughter took a lot like 160 and then slept for 4-7 hours at a time.

If your gut feeling doesn’t agree with your drs advice, maybe talk to another dr? We spend the most time with our babies and my best advice is trust your gut and get multiple opinions from healthcare professionals if you feel it’s necessary.

Mine was born 37 weeks + 4 days, came out very chunky then went very skinny like yours.
They drop their birth weight a few weeks after coming out, this is normal
He chunked back up around 3 months.
Obviously get him checked out if you’re concerned, just in my experience mine ate like a fish and was still very slim until 3 months. He still is very slim now at 4

Avatar

Every baby is different, doesn’t mean they are unhealthy because they don’t have some chub. My little boy was 4 days late and was thin, he was 8lb 3 at birth and only got chunky once he started solids.

She was a preemie & she’ll get chub as she gets older

Avatar

My son isn’t chunky. Never was. He’s happy and healthy and hit all milestones early and on time. Every baby is different

Avatar

With formula they are usually a little bigger … I would speak to your health visitor

Avatar

1 month is very young to be chubby! My son was born full term (41+6) and weigh 3.55kg. He’s now 7 months old (very tall as well) but not chubby at all! So some babies don’t get chubby and especially not at that age yet xx

Avatar

My little boy is now 15 months and is still as thin as a stick! Perfectly healthy and he does gain weight inline with his centile he just had a really low one and he eats like he’s never seen food before! Some babies are naturally very thin and that’s okay!

Avatar

My daughter was a skinny baby, she is now 7months old and has only just chunked up! She's very long too so was just long and skinny when she was born. I had her weighed regularly as she was lower centile but she's been signed off of observation now. She was BF and I introduced 2 formula feeds a day from 2months. Don't worry. Just have her weighed regularly as others have advised and as long as she's steady and they aren't concerned then your doing just fine. Each baby is different xx
