Food containing alcohol

Just eaten a shop bought beef bourguignon without even thinking about the red wine content. I breastfeed only, don’t even own a pump! Will I still be ok to breastfeed!?? I’m freaking out!! Baby is 7 months.

You can have a glass or two of wine whilst breastfeeding, so minimal amounts that have been through the cooking process is nothing.

Thank you 🤩

Alcohol has a low boiling point, so it's likely to have evaporated during the cooking process. So the total alcohol content in your portion will have been negligible, and likely so low that your blood alcohol content, and therefore your breastmilk alcohol content non existent. I've done some reading in the scientific literature around alcohol content in breastmilk. According to what I've read, breastmilk alcohol content mirrors blood alcohol content. It takes the average size woman 2.5 - 3 hours to metabolise 1 unit of alcohol. So if you drink 1 glass of wine, it'll take 2.5 - 3 hours before your breastmilk will be alcohol free.

It can take a very long time for even a small amount of alcohol to burn out of food - however as Tanya mentioned you jsut need to wait until it clears from your blood - pump & dump is completely unnecessary
