4 month old feeding issues

Hi moms,
My 4 month old has recently been feeding for very short periods. Like 5 mins and then gets very distracted or fussy. At night he will only take about 2-3 oz of milk. Outside of that he is normally breastfed. He is only taking 10-15 min feedings 2 or 3 times a day. Don’t know what to do. He’ll fuss to sit up or be picked up during most feedings. I’m worried he isn’t drinking enough. He’s still very active and only gets fussy during feedings or when he’s tired. He’s still peeing and pooping throughout the day. Anyone going through this have any advice?

I had a lactation consultant tell me he could get a full feed in five minutes. Depends on how fast your let down is. My guy is the same. Just nursed for 3 minutes. He’s 20lbs at 4.5months lol. Gained lots of weight so no one is worried. And he spits up a lot lol.

wow! That makes me feel a bit better. We have a doc appointment coming up so I’m praying his weight is still going up. Are your feedings about 2-3 hrs apart? Also is your LO showing signs of hunger? We’re teething so I’m getting a little confused on hunger vs gum pain these days.

Yes I try to keep it 2.5-3 hours but usually it’s closer to 2.5. I’m no expert and I’m a first time mom, so I am just figuring things out one thing at a time haha.

I get the same kind of fussy if he is tired or hungry. Teething is more hands in the mouth, drooling, eating things. But I find hunger is still a cry. Like when he’s tired. If that makes sense. But I did have to switch my mindset from “hands in the mouth means hungry” to “hands in the mouth means soothing”.

thank you! Yeah I think changing that mindset is what I need to work on. My little guy never really cries unless he is overtired. I kind of fed him every 3 hrs and observed for the hands in mouth thing before it ever escalated so now I’m in this situation of not knowing when he’s hungry. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Feels like I shouldn’t be this confused at this point but here we go! The teething cues help though so thanks!

Haha babies keep us on our toes. Just when you think you’ve figured something out, they go ahead and change things.

yes! Then he’s looking at me with the help me eyes and I’m like “I promise I’m trying!!”. Good to hear it’s not a “me” thing
