Baby 98th percentile advice

So little one was weighed today and she's on the 98th percentile, she's going to be weighed again in a month and if she goes off the scale HV is going to refer me to a paediatrician, if this happens what will they advise I do? My little one is 16 weeks old.. has anyone else been in my position?

Hm I’m not entirely sure my son is 99% and has always been big, but they never said that to me.

It was mentioned to me about my son when he was a baby, hes 2 now.. but nothing ever came of it. Hes always measured high in percentile. His 2 year appt he measured in 97th percentile.

My baby was born 99% for height and weight and at 3 months was off the chart for both. Nothing was ever said to me to be needed. I've already done his measurements at home in prep for 6 month in a few weeks and he's still off the chart but I'm not worried as he's in proportion.

My son was a very high percentile from birth up until around a year old. They never referred me on to anyone about it and he just naturally got more into the frame he is now as he started to lose the baby weight gradually and is on 50th centile and he will be 3 in May.

I think they will advise you of just general advice initially (depending on what their concerns are about her weight - they might not have any!). 98th centile just means that in a group of 100 children, 2 would be heavier than her but when this comes to babies they come in all shapes and sizes and I would only really see it becoming a “concern” as such is as they get older and if her weight was gaining quite rapidly but if she’s always followed that curve then I believe higher centiles aren’t a concern. I think they will give you general advice about only starting to introduce food at 6 months, not introducing refined sugars until after age 2 etc. basically all the things they advise anyway xx

My son has always been in the 90s. He was born 10lb 4oz and is still a big baby for his age. No health care professional I’ve seen has ever been concerned about his weight

It depends if its in proportion to her height, if both height and weight are measuring 98th or similar, there should be no reason for concern but if the weight is drastically off for her size then that needs to be looked into.

What theyre looking for if they do send you to a paediatrician, is to see if your baby has any metabolic growth issues.

Hey! My little one was always measuring off the chart, not even on a percentile. He was so tall though, and a lot of the time health visitor would just go off weight, and not look at all factors. After about 14 months his weight stayed the same and now he’s 22 months he’s still similar weight, he just gained really quickly and then once he started walking he has just stayed the same as he’s grown! I honestly would try not to worry too much as I spent so many nights upset worrying, especially when friends around us had similar age babies so much smaller. 🤍

My LO is 98th percentile from birth and still is. Are they saying your LO weight is 98th but height and head circumference is significantly lower? Thats the only reason I would think a doctor would raise that as a concern
