Sleep for Breastfed Babies

My LO is exclusively breastfed and is 8 weeks old this week. He only ever sleeps for an hour or so at a time, even during the night, and feeds every 2 hours. Is this normal for breastfed babies? Is there anything I can do to prompt longer sleeping during the night? Lack of sleep on my part is starting to take its toll.

This is the very reason I decided to bottle feed at night. The sleep deprivation was a killer 😵😵‍💫 Now he normally goes 5 hours and then 3 hours 😀 You have done amazing to exclusively breastfeed for 8 weeks 😄

@Michelle do you still breastfeed in the day then and formula on the night? How did you make the change?

Is LO little one? Our baby is 1 week and we’ve already introduced a bottle (pumped breast milk) for evening/ night so my partner can help because I was going insane feeding him every hour

yes I breastfeed throughout the day and have a stock of pumped milk in the freezer just incase its needed. He had problems with feeding from birth with tongue tie and jaundice and he wasn't feeding well enough so I used to have to top him up with a bottle after breast feeding until he went back up to his birth weight. He's now a really good weight and isn't fussy at all with his milk. Maybe get in touch with the infant feeding team for some advice. The first time he had a bottle, he just gulped it and choked which was quite scary so I just paced him and stop regularly for burping and breaks 😀

My baby is fully breastfed and will do a 3-4 hour stretch at the beginning of the night and then 2 hour stretches after that. She stays awake a lot though during the day as my toddler likes to wake her up 🙈 but we settle in the bedroom at around half 7 I make sure she’s had a really good feed and if she falls asleep before I think she’s done I’ll wake her up. She’s usually in her crib by 9/9.30. Then whenever she wakes in the night I give her one boob and when she starts dozing wake her with a nappy change so she then takes the other boob better. She’s 2.5 weeks old. Hope you get some sleep soon x

It's normal for babies. Not just breastfed babies. Newborns be newborning . And all different, too. I had one bottle fed baby up loads and one that slept through, a bf baby up ebery 45 -90 miks and now one that's sometimes doing 7 hour stretches overnight
