Hi due to some issues whilst in hospital my 4 week old has mainly expressed breast milk from a bottle with maybe 1-2 breastfeeds a day. Does anyone know what the ‘normal’ amount of breast milk should be per feed for this age? He is starting to seem a lot hungrier and doesn’t go for full 3 hours before showing hunger cues. In the middle of night he might only go an hour or so before wanting another feed but am unsure if he needs more or we are assuming he wants feeding when there is another issue?

The good news is that breastfed babies can't be overfed so if you put him on the breast after seeing cues - he will feed if hungry. Otherwise sometimes they just want the comfort of a pacifier to fall off to sleep and exhibit hunger cues.
You can use a calculation our lactation consultant told us about: number of kgs x 120mls divided by the number of feeds per day. So a 4 kgs baby needs 4 x 120 / 8 = 60mls per day to maintain weight but since we want them to grow we add on 20mls to ensure they're full and 20mls to ensure they grow so 100mls a feed is a good quantity for example. I hope this helps!
