Melatonin

My son is 24 months old! I keep reading conflicting stuff on melatonin for kids. I know some use it for their kiddos regularly, and some swear they never even tried it for their kiddos. What do yall think?? He's having some trouble sleep due to we just moved, he's overwhelmed.

Used it for my god daughter. It helped her sleep . We got the body wash first. Then tried the spray. We didn’t try the gummies though. Those 2 worked so we never tried anything further

I don't have personal experience with this, but this is the Boston children's hospital, they say not recommended for under 3. Probably best to check with a doctor if possible. https://answers.childrenshospital.org/melatonin-for-children/

Very bad. Messes with natural melatonin production

I wouldn’t use it regularly, then they rely on it for bedtime

I wouldn’t recommend it.

i’ve been wondering the same thing. i haven’t tried yet, but my son is so hyperactive.. his mind does not want to stop going even when he’s tired. it’s quite literally exhausting trying to put him to bed.

@Amanda Don’t do it. There are many other options that are safer! Look up melatonin free alternatives. There are many that work as good if not better!

No I wouldn’t..they won’t be able to sleep on their own. Because your body has natural melatonin

my bf has kids with a past woman, and friggin swears by the gummies and I get lowkey annoyed whenever he tells me he’s had kids before and knows what he’s doing etc. but personally i agree, and do not want my child taking them!

There's mixed reviews from family use/ personal but the facts remain the same that melatonin is not suggested in children. Like others said above it can mask what your body is supposed to naturally produce. This leads to insomnia, anxiety, depression etc later on. Take it from someone with a family member who is 21 & dealing with this now currently. I'd reduce screen time to living room only & 15 min a day of something low stimulating especially at 2. I'd also cut down to 2 small cups of milk daily offered am & with lunch, I'd push water & can mix some light juice for flavor to get them hydrated which also promotes healthy eating habits. If this is all things you already do.. don't feel crazy. Your toddler could utilize EI services in your area. Early Intervention helps not just figure out speech & delays, it helps with a possible adhd/ proper help but they won't softly diagnose until 3 & they'll still give you the right help in the right areas for your toddler. I'd contact them tomorrow, this is free.

Melatonin should be prescribed by a Dr, it has bad side effects, nightmares being one

No. I can’t even get it prescribed by my doctor in the uk for my asd son as needs to referred to a specialist. The fact it is sold like candy in the us is slightly horrifying.

My son take melatonin he is 2 years old his therapist told me that will help him since it helps with his sleep they are natural melatonin they are really good he start to sleeping early now and he waking up with a good mood they are liquid melatonin not gummies

there’s ways you can help melatonin production in the body naturally. help the circadian rhythm, no bright lights after a certain time, keep the bedtime consistent, maybe some calming music, magnesium cream on the feet, etc.. i’d say do anything other than the supplemental melanin because as many others said it will mess with your bodies natural production. but to each their own

@Karen same, also in the UK it's mad they can literally buy it off the shelves over there.

@Karen tell me about it. everything about the us is horrifying and i live here 😭

@Lauren you sound like my son’s early intervention lady that comes over haha, you’re so informative! those are all very helpful tips, thank you 💕

Most doctors won't suggest melatonin until children are at least 3 years old and usually only after you've tried multiple other things to help their sleep or their are other issues like ASD or ADHD. Tart cheeries/juice, milk, and oats help to stimulate natural melatonin production, try that along with a long winding down/quiet period before bedtime. Talk to your doctor before trying melatonin.

You could try magnesium instead. I’ll find a link x
