Dummy

Has anyone had success at getting rid of the dummy around the 8/9month mark? We’ve finally moved of little girl to her own room but she relies on the dummy to fall asleep and I’ve had to get out the bed a good few times in the night to put the dummy back in. Just wondering if anyone’s managed to successfully get their dummy reliant babies to sleep without their dummy or if I’ve left it too late and should now wait till she’s older.

They say the best time to take it away is 4 months. My first born didn’t stop the dummy till around 18 months. So I’ll be waiting till he’s ready to give up

I did with my eldest. Was awful for about 4 nights (only used for sleep) but then never needed it again. Glad we did as it meant he started to sleep through!!! Did it at 5mo this time round. Its rough but worth it.

We got rid of our dummy at 7 months happy to share what we did it’s worked for two other friends babies as well x

@Lauren that would be amazing if you don’t mind!! Xx

@Sophie did you just get rid cold turkey? And how did you go about it when they woke up for the dummy? Xx

@Angel I did read this! So I wasn’t going to try take it away as I felt like I’d missed the chance, but just wondered if anyone else had done it later as it’s really affecting her sleep so if I could do it now rather than wait it would be so helpful! X

Ive tried it recently and my son wouldn’t go at all. As soon as he got the dummy he was out like a light, however he doesn’t want it for naps and only uses it when he’s sleeping at night so guessing that’s a win x

We just went cold turkey. And when he woke up we patted him to sleep. Initially it took 20 mins each time to get back to sleep but by night 3 it was seconds. I'd say it's worth doing if it's causing lots of wake ups replacing the dummy.

I've been considering this recently and gone back and forth but I am reluctant to go cold turkey. Id be interested to hear how you managed @Lauren

We had the same issue when she first moved then all of a sudden she figured out how to put it in herself and now we don’t get any wake ups at all. I did attempt to put her down without it last night but she got really upset. I may start by just removing it from the cot when she falls asleep and see how that goes💀

@Jamie so we didn’t do cold turkey we phased it out. So for the first week we stopped giving the dummy to her if she cried and removed it out of sight. The only time we would use the dummy was for naps and car journeys . 2nd week we removed the dummy from bedtime routine(we did this for 4 days) on the 5 th day we stopped giving it to her if she woke up in the middle of the night If she woke up. And day 13 we removed the dummy altogether. Don’t get me wrong it was really tough but by 3 weeks it took less time to get her down and now we can sometimes get her down sleepy but awake. She can do an hour car journey awake without the dummy x
