Anyone have a child with a really rare name?

We have picked a rare name for our son. Sorley. It’s Scottish. Meaning summer wanderer. He will be born in the summer, we are adventurous and we eloped on Scotland. So it’s perfect for us!

But I’m worried about reactions when we tell people. Decided not to tell people until he is born so people don’t put us off as we love it.

Anyone has similar situation?

Our daughters are Nevaeh and Aurelia. Some people love it some people don't but we do and that's the main thing 🥰 we like unique names.

beautiful names! I’m not worried too much about it but dreading that ‘ohhhh that’s different’ 😂😂

Thank you 🥰 I got that a lot when I had Nevaeh you soon get used to it 🤣 trust me though going to baby groups there are so many unique names now...think it's more strange to have a 'common' name 🤣

that is very true!

We named our son Kaleo and worried about the same but honestly the reaction has been great. We just needed to keep telling people how to pronounce it! It has a lot of meaning behind it and it was the perfect choice for us 💗

lovely name! I love names that are different ♥️

That meaning is gorgeous! Our son was born in the summer at sunrise on the first warm sunny day in what felt like weeks of rain. We named him Sunny (we didn't have a boys name picked out before). It's not as unusual but still some people don't like it due to the spelling. I still love it.

Although I've never heard of Sorley I don't think it sounds weird or that out there. For girls we were looking at Irish names due to my heritage and fairly rare ones that I imagine not that many English people would know, I felt saying we're Irish was reason enough, as is your reason IMO. I agree with not telling people. don't let them ruin it for you. I love it!

My daughters are Gracyn Lumi Elara and Brea Loru Eliana. We only told their names when they were born.

that’s lovely meaning! I’m so sentimental. I love things having a story!

I like the spelling sunny! I think if a warm happy person 💛

Yes that’s what we think. It’s not like a weird name just unusual. It’s really grown on us and that’s what we call bump now. So it’s sticking.
I found it from looking up Scottish makes. I think it has an Irish meaning too.

I love Irish names! I don’t think it matters if you come from a country or not. If you like it. I’m sure many people name their children’s that are from different origin without realising.

I bet you come up with a beautiful name ♥️

My girl is called Inca. So far everyone has loved that name but there’s been a few elderly people that say ‘ahhh…that’s different’ I just find it funny 🤣 we also told everyone her name after she was born 💕

Avatar

Inca is so cute

Inka is quite popular name in Finland. I like it. 😊

Love the Name Sorley and the meaning! It's awesome!
Embrace the "oohhh it's so different"
Better than another common name!
Your child is special! ❤️
I still don't have a name for my girl... 😅 I'm afraid of picking a common one.

Avatar

thank you ☺️ it feels right to have it. I found girls names easier to find tbh x

Avatar

I had boys names picked out since I was 90% sure it would be a boy until a few weeks ago. 😂
Now we are struggling with the girl names and we can't agree on any. 🙈

Avatar

that’s the hard part. Agreeing lol

Avatar

Unusual seems to be the norm these days lol! It's only when the name is really stupid that people comment!

Avatar

seems to be that way, I’m having a very large age gap and think I’m still thinking of how it was before. My other 2 children have common names.

My 3 are named: Amari (m), Micah (m) & Khaia (f)

I think it’s lovely to have an unusual name. Mine was quite rare growing up and I liked it. Have a look on this naming page in Instagram. They share both unusual and most popular names https://www.instagram.com/little_name_library/profilecard/?igsh=MTVzZzFrOHpwc3R1bQ==

we found our name on TikTok after looking up Scottish names 😂

Maybe he won't get bullied if it's common there 🤷🏻‍♀️

My son is Cillian. We live in the US but spell it the traditional Irish way. We haven’t met another Cillian or Killian before.

why would he get bullied?
