Eczema or food allergy?

Hi! My baby has mild eczema (nothing major or worrisome) but it makes it hard when we’re letting her try new foods. I’m always questioning whether it’s just an eczema rash or a food allergy. Do food allergy rashes generally happen around the mouth or does it vary? Does it tend to show up pretty quickly and go away soon after? Anyone have any experience with this? Thank you!!

Best thing to do is keep a food diary and see if you can determine what is causing the rash.

My daughter always got a rash/hives around her mouth and it would disappear within a couple of hours. The rash/hives can show up instantly or within an hour/couple of hours of consuming the food x

Good to know! She’s never had any facial rashes and they usually don’t go away for a couple of days so I’m leaning towards eczema but I never want to accidentally ignore an allergy symptom! Food diary is a good idea

How did you discover it was dairy and eggs? I haven’t been able to narrow anything down.

My baby girl used to get excema and reacted to almost every new food by getting a rash on her face or neck, until she turned about 8 months. Now she's fine.

Eczema is a symptom of some form of allergic reaction. You'll need to keep a food diary to see what's flared up.

if you don’t mind me asking , what was she allergic to? x

We suspected that it was oats, wheat, tomatoes, banana, strawberry and egg. So I cut all these out of her diet and the rash went away as soon as she stopped eating this. We then went for a skin prick test a few months later and it came up that she has an egg allergy on top of her milk allergy. Everything else she grew out of x

thank you! My son gets this rash and I THINK it might be potatoes and tomatoes but unsure.

Try them both on their own first thing in the morning on different days and see if a rash appears. Food diary is a good thing to do as well x

If it comes and goes around her mouth I would guess allergy or sensitivity. They can grow out of a lot of allergies my son was allergic to dairy at 9 months and grew to be no longer reactive by 14 months
