I have been working at a school since Sept 2024 and want to quit now. Will I get maternity allowance as I have worked 26 weeks and paid my NI. I am not a UK citizen. And how much do you actually receive? Will I have to pay anything back?

How many weeks pregnant are you?
It’s all dependant on what you earnt in the 26 weeks.

When you say you’re not a uk citizen what’s your status?
You need to have worked for 26 weeks in the last 66 weeks before your due date for maternity allowance or for 26 weeks before the 15th week of pregnancy for full maternity pays
Thank you for your replies ladies. I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant. I've been in the UK for almost 4 years , on a dependent visa ( my husband works in the NHS ) and I earn about 1400 net pay per month. I have finished 26 weeks of work since I started but I'm wondering how much I would receive and for how long. Whether I'd have to pay anything back if I resign now, whether I'd still qualify because of my statys as a NON UK resident.
I'm also confused between the difference between SMP and maternity allowance as there is too much information out there.

You probably wouldn’t receive the full £187 a week as I assume on the amount you are part time but you should be eligible for a certain amount, you would need to apply directly to DWP (you can download the forms from .gov website) you won’t have to pay anything back.
SMP is paid via your current workplace with their own eligibility criteria and the first 6 weeks is at 90% of your salary followed by the £187.18 per week for the next 33 weeks (you might be eligible for an enhanced payment if you stay depending on their company policy).
Maternity allowance is paid directly from the government for those that don’t qualify for SMP and is £187.18 a week or 90% of weekly earnings if that is less for 39 weeks.
In regards to your visa I believe you would qualify but your best bet is to call DWP to check (dept of work place and pensions). Hope this helps xx
tysm for this! I work full time 8:45-3:15 Monday to Friday. But this has given me clarity. I just wanted to double check if it with be for 39 weeks and if I would be eligible if I quit my job at 15 weeks pregnant. Thanks again lovely
