Weaning advice

Hi, my little one has had slow weight gain since birth (will be 6 months next week) but we’ve been advised to start early weaning because of it. I’m just really struggling to know the best time to give her solids as I’m currently breastfeeding with high energy formula bottle top-up after. It’s just hard to know when and how to fit in the solids! I know the saying is ‘Food for fun before 1’ so she still needs the same amount of milk (especially with the slow weight gain). Any advice greatly appreciated :)

You could just try inbetween her bottles so it wouldn't impact the milk intake as much so if she feeds at 7am you could try some porridge or whatever you plan on feeding her at 9am. You can also make sure you make everything with the formula so making porridge or baby rice mixed with formula ect! It's really hard I had the same with my first we had to wean at 4 months on advice of the hospital due to her weight and reflux ! You wouldn't think it now she's one the biggest kids in her class at school ! X

Earlier in the day so if there are any reactions it's during daytime is the general advice I've seen. Fit it in when it works best for you

@Chloe Thank you for :) Tbh I struggle to get her to take the bottle top-ups as it is! 🤦‍♀️ But I think generally, after she’s had milk is probably better isn’t it, but it’s just allowing enough of a gap. Yeah, we are doing that as well. Yes, she has reflux too. Ah ok, well that’s very good to know! How was she with weaning? Mine doesn’t seem too keen at the moment 🙈 x

@Jess it's really tricky but they will naturally start dropping milk once they start weaning I know they say food is for fun but every baby is different my oldest was completely off milk by the time she was 9 months not by choice she just preferred food and the doctors was happy that she was gaining well and still having the formula mixed in with things but my toddler had formula till she was 1 ! The reflux is awful and some foods make it worse I think citrus things and tomatos are the worst culprits ! My oldest wasn't interested at first looking back she was probably too young but it was on advice of the hospital and she was literally just being sick constantly but we kept trying and once we had been spoon feeding her for a bit we moved to baby led weaning which she loved ! It's scary at first but they are less likely to choke with blw and she started eating really well x

@Jess best thing is to try small amounts after a feed, or feed until content and then try a puree and best to do it in the daytime just in case of any allergic reactions. I tried my little one with strawberries and apples puree first, fed her milk until she was content but still hungry then tried the puree, now she absolutely loves puree/Porridge and rusks x

So the saying food before one is just for fun is absolute 💩 it’s not just for fun. At 6mo the gut needs to start learning how to process vitamins from food as iron stores slowly decline from 6m. Babies aren’t expected to be on 3 meals until min 10 months. Start with one meal. Whichever is easiest for you. You can incorporate the milk into meals so making porridge with it, adding it to mash potatoes or pancakes etc. Allergens are advised to be introduced early in both the day and weaning and also as the only allergen (you can give a non common allergen with it though so say blueberries in porridge but avoid banana and strawberries) baby will naturally start to drop milk into order to add another meal too so take their lead but always offer breast before food

About an hour after milk should be a good time, won't be overly full and will be peckish enough to take some in hopefully, without impacting on the milk feed. Also, this isn't early weaning! It's recommended age weaning.
