Photo etiquette

Is it frowned upon to take pictures of your kid when they are around a bunch of other little kids? Like the other kids will definitely be in the photo at story time or group play at library.

As long as you don’t post them I think it’s okay. Also, if you do post, just make sure to cover any kids faces that show

Avatar

Yes as above I get a bit funny about people taking photos with my son in the background, and I would never take a photo with somebody else’s child in the shot.

Avatar

depends as long as your child is right infront of the camera. When I take pictures of my kids I’m very careful not to include other kids in the photo I don’t want to look like a creep

Avatar

I have the unpopular opinion but I think it’s okay. It’s a picture of your kid as the main focus. As long as you aren’t being weird about it I think one or two is okay. And of course not posting without at least blurring other kids faces.

I think you should do what you can to ensure other children aren’t identifiable in any photos.

I work in a school, there’s been a few situations happen where an at risk or vulnerable child has been captured in an image, unbeknownst to the person taking the photo, shared online, and and as result someone they’re being kept safe from, has been able to find them.

Where possible, I really try not to get other children in photos of my little ones. If I were to capture other children in the background, I wouldn’t share that image anywhere, just incase.

this! You never know if a protected child may be put at risk by a photo taken of them that's shared online.

If someone is taking pictures and my daughter is around, I move her out the way if it's a public space. If it's a play group etc., they usually have rules about no phones so I'll remind them of that

Avatar

I know where I am at there is a strict policy at Children Centers and any activity for children at libraries that no phones are allowed to be out in the room at all and absolutely no photos. You literally can’t even pull your phone out for a call or text, you have to go outside as it is a safeguarding issue

Avatar

I usually wait until my kid gets at an angle where I don't capture others but I will ask if there's someone gonna be in the shot

Avatar

I know you can’t always ask but like when my daughter is at gymnastics I take the occasional photo/video of her and try my hardest not to have other kids around but if they are, I simply ask the parent if it’s okay to take a photo

Avatar

Generally yes but you don’t know of someone is using portrait mode. I use it all the time in baby classes, anyone in the background is automatically blurred

Avatar

Problem is the social media aspect. some children can’t be photographed for safeguarding reasons..

E.g; child is under protection from a person. The person sees the picture with child and figures out where they go. Person then goes and breeches safeguarding by going themselves to see child. Then whatever can possibly happen next.

Yea and especially if there are childminders there, my partner at a dance class was just taking a picture of our toddler solo, but the lady came up to have a go, because the children with her are not hers, I get it, we respect that, so now I'm just very mindful especially around groups of childminders going to playgroup and library.

My library storytime sessions have banned camera use during the session for this reason. Before that came into play though, I tried to record and take pics of him by himself but if any kid was to be behind or next to him then they’re inadvertently in the frame by I don’t scan my phone around the whole room. But yeah they’ve banned it now anyway. At parks and playgrounds I still do it, I’ve got heaps of photos w him but we’re usually w another mum and their kid so their kids are always in the frame. The regular mums I do playdates with though don’t mind them being posted I’ve already asked since it’s not our first play date it’s been posted before

I try to do portrait mode as much as I can, so that other kids are blurred out, unless they’re my friends’ kids & they say it’s okay .

If I happen to quickly take a photo, I put stickers over literally everybody else’s face, including adults I don’t know.

Avatar

I try to only take pictures of my child, but it's not always possible.
I am careful not to share photos with any other children in them though.

I don’t post pics on social media but obv the other parents don’t know that. I wouldn’t ever want to put a child in danger. Also though there are times like at the zoo when capturing another kid is unavoidable. I don’t want to miss capturing the moment because there are a million people around. I can see in smaller settings just not doing it or asking permission. I also want to catch big moments in future classes or practices. I think I would have some entitlement issues if I am paying a ton for a class and I can’t take photos. Thanks for the insight everyone

Avatar

I wouldn't care if someone did that to my child but out of respect for others I just don't take photos if any other kids are in the background

Avatar

The libraries ask parents not to take photos during these sessions for this reason. I wouldn't like it if someone took a pic of my babycwithout asking (even if she's just in the background)

Avatar

I will take photos of my son in crowded kid spaces like museums and play places or the zoo, other kids inevitably end up in the shot sometimes, I always state to the moms around something like "I just take these pictures for me, I don't post anything, is that okay?" I've never had a mom get upset at me over this. I think the fear of pics is social media and as long as you're communicative with the other parents that you won't post, they are usually cool with it! I do my best to avoid getting others in the shot but in super crowded spaces it sometimes happens! But I would NEVER post a picture with someone else's child in the background Though, I don't post my own kid either, except for this app!

Avatar

they didn’t announce it at class. Is it like posted somewhere dingdong or something? I’m honestly asking I don’t know where to look bye-bye for the rules.

Avatar

I don’t post my daughter online. But if someone were to do this where my daughter is in the background I know I can’t really control it if we’re in a public setting.

Avatar

I've seen it online (I think it was under the kiddies events)

Avatar

In that specific situation yes! But if you are out at a park and trying to get a picture of your child then no. But when you are in a specific group setting like story time and such then that’s an AH move
