How to make formula? (breastfeeding mama)!

Hi ladies,

Happy mother’s day!

I exclusively breastfeed but my son almost definitely has CMPA and i’m at my wits end with it all. We have been prescribed a special formula and i’m debating using it & moving him onto formula going forward BUT me & partner don’t have a clue how to make up a bottle, what equipment is needed for warming bottles, how to make a bottle when out & about etc.!

Please can you advise how you do it, how you know how much milk to make up for them, how you go out for the day and make/take a bottle? Can you make bottles up in advance or do you have to go downstairs in the night and make them up fresh?

I heard lots of bad reviews about tommee tippee prep machine and nuby rapid cool - are there other methods/equipment instead of these?

We are total beginners and appreciate any info so we can see how easy/difficult it will be if we do change over to formula fed!

Thanks!

When out I take a flask with me with boiled water and put the correct amount in the little formula pots
I’ve also got one of those nuby rapid cools to cool the water down
Which is a life saver
Basically you want to put the amount of ozs you of water in to your bottle then tip all but an oz into the rapid call if you are getting, put your formula into the oz of boiling water which will kill of any nasty bacteria mix so it de solves then add the cooled boiled water from the rapid to your bottle and mix together

My baby is 4 weeks and is on 5oz per feed and has a bottle every 2-4 hours. At home and at nighttime I use the Tommee Tippee machine but when out and about I use the hot shot method. I have a flask of boiling water from the kettle and I pour 2 ounces of hot water add the formula, give it a swirl to kill the bacteria and then top up with cooled boiled water, then another swirl. Literally takes a couple of mins to prepare.

My baby is nearly 6 weeks and has 120/150ml every 3 hours roughly, at night she goes longer stretches. We have the tommee tippee cooling flask which we use day and night. Pour the amount of water you need into the bottle, then pour majority of the water into the cooling flask, put the formula powder into the hot water and mix about, once cooled pour in the cooled water. Make sure you check your formula box for how many scoops per ml, usually 1 scoop per 30ml (120ml is 4 scoops). At night (we make the bottles in bed) and when we go out we prep the formula into pots with the correct amount and have a flask of hot water and the cooling flask, we always make fresh bottles for each feed. They should sleep longer stretches during the night as well once they’re used to it 😊

We personally use the tommee tippee prep machine, used with our first too and it’s always worked great for us. We have one upstairs and one downstairs so we don’t need to go down in the middle of the night. When we’re out we have the nuby rapid cool which is great. Just need to take a flask of boiling water straight from kettle and then use your bottle to measure out the water you need. If we are going to need to use this more than once then we will do the hotshot method and keep 10ml per scoop back then use the nuby to cool down boiling water. Put the formula into the hotshot and then fill up with the cooled water from nuby. If a 3oz bottle you’d keep 30ml back for the hotshot. I’m going to my parents in a couple of days and just going to take the nuby with me instead of taking the prep machine so it’s less to cart about x

We just make up 7/8 bottles and keep them in the fridge. They last up to 24 hours, but he gets through them and then just warm them when it's time for a feed
