Haakaa for catching let down

I’m EBF at the moment and hoping to introduce bottles at 6 weeks once breastfeeding has been established. I don’t want to pump just yet as I don’t want to mess up my supply. But I thought it might be great to start building a stash now with a Haakaa as it catches your let down for you.

The first night I used it I managed to collect 30ml of my let down and thought this is great I’ll build a stash in no time and my supply isn’t affected. The same night I used the Haakaa my baby girl started cluster feeding. She was hungry after every feed and needed more milk, I thought maybe she was just having a rough time but I decided not to try the Haakaa again and boom she’s back to feeding normal and sleeping normal.

I don’t think the Haakaa collects let down I think it actively pumps milk out of you I definitely do not see 30ml worth of let down in my bra after a feed.

When I had my first I didn’t breastfeed in the end as he didn’t latch well. I also don’t think my milk really came through as quick as it did this time around as I had none of the symptoms as I did this time around but I brought a Haakaa when I attempted and it did draw out tiny bits of milk I think it was because of the suction. I also spoke to the national breastfeeding helpline on Friday she said you actually never run out of milk if you continue to breastfeed. I was pumping and I think I put myself into oversupply slightly as my sons only 2 weeks but she said to gradually cut down and not to make any drastic changes I went from pumping 2/3 times a day to one less then yesterday to just one and now I haven’t pumped today which has helped my boobs aren’t as sore in the morning. Another midwife said to just pump what you want to replace so if you want to eventually give a bottle just pump once a day if you want to just give one etc. hope that helps (+44 300 100 0212 - open 24/7)

I think cluster feeding is quite normal especially through growth spurts so I don't think it has anything to do with you collecting more milk in the haakaa if anything it indicates to your body you should be producing more milk.

So the haakaa is a pump, it will draw out the milk

I find when I use it, it takes away milk from my baby's feed, then yes she ends up cluster feeding because she's still hungry, she's missing that milk that's been drawn out in the haakaa.

Now this isn't a problem it will only build the milk supply, you just want to be careful you don't create an oversupply and get uncomfortable.

I only use my haakaa or pump when I can be bothered to deal with the cluster feeding after lol

If you suction the haakaa on to your breast it works as a pump. You could try a milk collector that you put on without suction which will only collect whatever you leak. I usually get about 1oz of leaking from the opposite breast. I mainly use it as I don’t want to keep changing breast pads but I guess you could build a small stash with it.
