Son Scared of Potty

Hi everyone! My son will be 3 in the beginning of May. We have been having a hard time with potty training. He seemed really interested around 2 1/2 and so we got a little potty and a seat for the big one. He was excited to sit on it and then lost interest after awhile. I didn’t want to push him so we just took his lead. About a month ago I started a reward system with lots of positive reinforcement and prizes. He went three times #1 and even #2 over the course of 2 days. Then all of a sudden he is scared to go! He won’t sit on the potty without crying and says he is too nervous. We have been trying to reward just sitting on it, but I am not sure what else to do! Anybody have any advice?? Much appreciated!!

I work in child care and this is very common for boys. I recommend getting books about going potty and making going to the potty just a normal part of his routine. If he has his own little potty let him decorate it with stickers and write his name on it so he knows it’s his special potty. Definitely praise all the positives, even if he just touches the potty or says hi to it. Then work your way up to sitting on the potty while singing one or two songs. Potty training can be very emotional for little children because it’s a big change. He’ll get the hang of it soon enough. Hope this helps!

@Kaleigh I love the idea of him decorating it! Thank you!!

Just signed on to write this exact issue. So glad it's not uncommon. We seem to have had a fight with every milestone along the way and feel exhausted. @Kaleigh thank you!

@Emma glad to help! Little boys tend to feel like they’re losing a part of themselves when going on the potty, so of course that can be a scary thing. Most children can be stubborn and want to push boundaries especially with their parents. Raising strong children takes a strong mama! You got this!
