Matching Sibling Names

I always see posts here asking for opinions on whether or not names match existing sibling names. As a 36 year old twin with kind of paired names, it’s never mattered. Also, most of a person’s life is lived as an adult and will not be associated with their sibling. Am I the only one who thinks this is silly? This is not intended to be unkind or an insult. I just think being mindful of a good name is more important than matching.

Doesn't matter, but isn't silly

It doesnt matter at all, but my little girl has a short and sweet name so i want another short and sweet name for my next little girl. I like the idea of not being able to shorten there name so they get called by there actual name 😁. They dont need to rhyme or match or anything like that. & if i fell inlove with a long name for my next id defo use it. Just like the idea of short & sweet names more ☺️

My matching sibling name does matter, to me and my family. I’m close with my family and I love that me and my brothers have matching names. My husband and his brother have matching names so of course we gave my daughters matching names. We all love it. We really don’t care if other people like it or not and it’s totally fine if they think it’s silly or unimportant, it doesn’t affect them in any way shape or form so their opinion doesn’t matter. I’ve definitely asked for advice on my kids names and stated I wanted them to match any comments stating “matching is silly” were ignored. They chose not to scroll so I scrolled past their comment because it matters to me that’s why I posted asking.

As a Twin Mum I can tell you that raising twins is fucking hard, so if I want to give them names that compliment each other I will. Does it matter, no. Is it silly, also no.

VERY SILLY. omfg every time i see it i'm confused like...that kid is not a matching doll set with your others, why do their names have to flow 💀?? it's weird esp cause unless you ARE twins, you and your siblings' names aren't even said together all that often so what is the point? and even then, all the twins i knew growing up were referred to as 'the twins' lmfaooo? they are their own ppl but some are concerned about the aesthetics i guess!

@destiny 🪬 I have a toddler and twins toddlers, all 3 have names that complement each other. Me and brother (not twins) have names that vaguely complement each other. Complementing names is completely a matter of personal opinion so really people wanting names that are perceived as matching is still personal opinion. You might think my twins name match, you might not... but wanting them to match (from my perception) isn't silly. If people ask me my kids names I tell them all 3 names.

@Mou love that for you, but was that anecdote supposed to make the concept make more sense or-? why is it not silly then?

My siblings and I don't match exactly but they are all old fashioned. Elishabeth, Joshua, Thomas, Abigail The girls have matching nicknames elli and abbi

I don’t think it really matters but I have a family member that had 2 kids with very basic and common names but wanted to name her third Saphera. It was such a different vibe everyone thought it was so weird. It’s not a bad name it was just so out there compared to the ones she had already. I think things like Carson, Mason, and Jason matching or all the same letter matching is weird (my whole family are matching T) but I feel like following a vibe is normal

I get that super matchy-matchy is maybe a little unnecessary (i.e. rhyming, or starting with the same letter) but I do think that one benefit of having similar length or genre of names is to encourage sibling equality. Kids will find the craziest things to get jealous about, so showing that you put a similar amount of effort and thought process into your children’s names can help with that. My husband’s sister was named Natasha Alexandra (named after a character in Tolstoy’s War and Peace) while his name is just John. Always felt a little funny. While me and my siblings (4 of us total), all had similar genre first names and each had middle names that tied to family members. Felt very equitable and I never felt like an afterthought.

@destiny 🪬 was that a shitty US attempt at sarcasm. Lacking. Come back to us when you have another kid and you're choosing names.

I love matching names but part of the reason I chose matching names was with their future in mind. Should they go into business together one day or make a band together or anything like that, they've already got really cool names that sound great together lol

@Mou i don't know why you're pissed off cause that was a genuine question but your lack of an actual answer speaks volumes 😊 no more babies over here! i only need one. just silly

@FairyMother 🦖🌸 i like this answer!

@destiny 🪬 so if you'll never have more than one kid, what's your issue. Youll never get it. Just need another reason to judge some other mums for stupid shite.

@Mou and the question still goes unanswered. nobody's judging miss defensive. oh no so sad. cry about it with jaylen kaylen and shaylen

I want my kids names to sound nice together since thru their whole childhood I will most likely be saying them together. I feel like this isn’t silly at all. We have Kali and have both agreed when we have another it’ll be a short name like hers and either start with k or end in the same sound. For instance Kali and koa sounds a lot better than Kali and Nathan it’s as simple as that

My twins have the same first letter for their first names, but don't "match". However their middle names match & rhyme

lol my twin sister and I have the same letter and same vibe middle names. When we introduced ourselves to people it felt like we were like tweedledee and tweedledum. But I’m sure some people liked having matching names.

@FairyMother 🦖🌸 cute
