Intermittent fasting and breastfeeding

Hi all, I EBF and also want to start on loosing some pregnancy weight. I heard breastfeeding makes you lose weight but no one mentioned the amount of food consumed too 😂. I have done IF consistently before and lost a good amount of weight , 78kg to 60kg. My dilemma is, I don’t want to do anything that will affect my milk supply, breast feeding is priority over anything else . So does anyone IF and breastfeed ? Also, does anyone know if taking apple cider vinegar whilst breastfeeding is safe? Taking ACV with lemon every day was also part of my IF/OMAD regime.

How old is your baby? Just because I also EBF as do several of my friends and our babies are now 10 months and we weigh less than we did pre-pregnancy despite the fact that we eat like bears! Only mentioning as you may find that the weight just comes off without you having to do anything xx

I just asked about this to both my dr and my baby’s and it’s safe after 6 months when the baby is on solids just in case any nutrients are lacking from the milk and as long as you are eating enough calories and nutrient dense foods during your eating period. Deffs check with ur dr and run past your ped !

I haven’t been able fast while breastfeeding. It affected my supply and caused a drop in my milk production.

IF will WRECK your supply. You have to fuel your body well and consistently to maintain your supply. Please know that "bounce back" culture is bullshit amd you don't owe anyone a body that doesn't look like it had a baby because it did. You owe yourself a healthy body that you're comfortable in. Be patient with yourself and give yourself grace.

I have actually put on more weight whilst EBF and baby is 8m

@Jasmin hi , he is 4 months in a weeks time . Hmmm okay, maybe it’ll start dropping off in a few months

@Bonnie that’s what I’m afraid of

@Charlotte thanks for your kind words . To be honest it’s not about bouncing back. It’s feeling good with myself as well when I wear my cloths . I’m actually bigger than when I was pregnant with my baby. But of course feeding my baby is priority

@Suad same 😩😂

I didn’t start IF until he was 3yrs that’s when he stopped BF and that’s when I’d lost all my baby weight already I started IF to maintain what I’d lost. What I DID do though, was eat healthy drink healthy and took baby out every day to get my 10k steps in, just by doing that I got back to weight in a year. I do daily yoga, 1hr stretch in the morning when he naps, and then he wakes we both get ready to go to his baby bounce classes. At 4m I did a Pilates and a Zumba session at 6-7pm when I can leave baby home w him and go to my fitness classes. I did manage to lose weight BF but I’m really picky w what I eat (as in I don’t eat junk) I drink heaps so I pee heaps lol and yeah my 10k steps. Take baby out every day. Move your body and get some fresh air and sunshine it does both baby and me a whole lotta good. Plus I get to meet mums and socialise by being out

@Kellie thank you! I need to be consistent with taking baby on walks. We do go out to baby classes and meet other mums . I just don’t want to get to the point where it’s harder for me to loose weight . So any little thing I can do now whilst still ensuring my baby is well breastfed.

Don’t be too hard on yourself you’ve just grown a baby and now you’re making all their food to keep them alive! It’s absolutely exhausting, I didn’t realise how tired breastfeeding made me until I stopped. Lead a healthy lifestyle, make good food choices and exercise and worry about the weight when you’ve stopped breastfeeding!

Check out GetMomStrong on Instagram for lots of great tips on how you can work on your body in a healthy way that will still support breastfeeding. There are plenty of other ways to like the way your body feels in clothes without IF.

@Charlotte thank you

I would be very careful with this. Fasting while breastfeeding can ruin your supply and wreck your blood sugar. Not all women lose weight while breastfeeding….focus on losing weight AFTER your baby is weaned or no longer relying on you for their sustenance (after a year). Instead of worrying about eating, just get more active! In the first year, I couldn’t even delay eating breakfast as my blood sugar would plummet and I would get faint. My baby did nurse A LOT, though.
