Combination feeding

New to the breast feeding crew and wondering how people go about combination feeding. I've never breast fed before so I'm unsure how I go about introducing formula aswell as breast. Any advice would be great đź’—

I've been combi-feeding my little guy 🙋‍♀️ we do breast all day until his last evening feed at 8ish when he gets a small formula top up. He then gets two full bottles of formula throughout the night and back to boob in the morning. My baby was almost exclusively formula fed until 4 weeks old so it's been a journey 🫠 I gave up pumping entirely because triple feeding is hell!

How long did it take you to work out what worked for you. I've just started. So I need all the advice. I absolutely hate pumping so it's not on the table for me. I like BF but I want my husband to be able to feed her every now and then. She's taking one formula right now in the afternoon since y.day and she takes it fine and it's all going well I just worry that if I start introducing more my milk will stop. So do I stay at one bottle of formula for like s week and then introduce 2 and so on. I'd prefer to BF her at night and bottle in the day until bed time is that realistic of me or no? Sorry for all the questions I honestly just don't know what I'm doing lol xx

It took a long time to figure out what worked and it wasn't easy! For me, I wanted my husband to be able to do some feeds and I value my sleep so evening and nighttime formula was the best option for us. Honestly, unless you're pumping, your milk supply will decrease with the more formula you introduce because you simply don't need it but it shouldn't stop unless you stop. The only thing I would say is that a woman's supply is naturally lower in the evenings/nights and highest in the mornings. So that might make things more difficult for you but nothing is impossible. Make any changes small and slow to give your body a chance to adapt

It's a minefield. So it won't stop my milk, but it will decrease which is fine as I won't need my milk in the day would I if I'm going to formula in day (eventually) and then BF at night? What if I BF all night and the morning feed and then went onto formula could that work or will that just confuse my boob's?

I had a nightmare with mastitis and vasospasm so had to introduce formula. I now only give my baby formula but for a while I combi-fed. I did all feeds formula except for one in the morning and one in the evening which was pumped milk. It did however dry up my milk supply so if you want to continue with breastmilk, you may need to pump more frequently than I did

@Amy what I will say is everyone's sippy is different and will react different, try whatever you want to work and if it doesn't work you can adjust it. You can increase supply by pumping if required.

I really don't like pumping at all, I feel like this is why I'm so like "ahhhhh what do I dooo" i might keep with the one bottle of formula a day for like a week, see if my boob's adjust to missing that 1 feed and then try and introduce more. She's going between bottle and breast really well. Been no issues at all with that. I just worry il mess my supply up and be in pain or discomfort. I've not had it easy with breast feeding with latch, unknown tongue tie etc I don't want to go back to being in discomfort with my boob's. Xx
