Weaning

My baby is 7 months and doesn’t eat much, trying a mix of purées and BLW - goes nuts for pouches and yoghurt but that’s it really. Picks up all of the food and gives it a go but really don’t think he’s actually ingesting much. Any advice or tips? Is this normal? I see lots of people on here posting that their babies are having 3 meals a day!

I think that’s fairly normal. Until the age of one, any food is just for fun as their main nutrition comes from milk. I’d say go easy on yourself and try not to compare yourself to others. I had given up on BLW but his dad suggested giving him meat and he absolutely loves it 😂 he by no means clears his plate, but he does put stuff in his mouth, which is a win for us

@Ropa do you just give puree? So funny you say that as we gave him some Chicken this evening and he seemed to love chewing on it!

I give him bits of everything - I sometimes blend down super smooth purees and they work great for spoon-feeding and he cries for more. Then I’ve also started giving him more lumpy things - like mashed veg and cooked down apples. He plays with that more than he eats it tbh, so I’ll try to spoon feed a little bit for him to get used to the taste and texture. Then we also do strips of meat (which he loves). For me, as long as he tries bits of everything, I’m happy. My goal is exposure to as many foods as possible and to normalise us eating together. If the goal was for him to get full at each meal I’d be going crazy by now 🤣

Absolutely normal! We do 2 meals but he only actually eats small amounts, we haven't dropped any milk feeds. We do blw and at this stage my focus is exposure to new tastes and textures as well as learning the eating skills - grabbing and bringing food to mouth, chewing, swallowing, using a spoon etc. He eats with us at the table so he can also observe and learn the habits/culture around eating

Even if babies are on 3 meals a day, doesn't necessarily mean they're eating loads at every meal! I'm finding my baby doesn't eat much off the spoon she just wants to play with the spoon instead 😂 but if I try to feed her she often turns her head away. She much prefers finger foods and exploring in her own time, but definitely isn't actually eating much at the moment! If he's exploring the food that's great, even if he doesn't eat much just yet he's still learning lots ☺️
