Posterior tongue tie - what to do?

I’m feeling uncertain and would really appreciate some guidance. My 2-month-old has been diagnosed with a mild posterior tongue tie. He’s primarily bottle-fed — both expressed breast milk and formula — with 1–2 direct breastfeeding sessions a day. Initially, he breastfed more, but he started getting fussy at the breast. I’m not sure if that’s due to nipple confusion or a latching issue. He had frequent hiccups in the womb and still gets them now. During feeds (breast or bottle), he makes clicking noises and tends to be gassy. He moves his tongue, but when he sticks it out, he also pushes his lip forward and doesn’t seem to extend the tongue over his lower lip. I also experience some nipple pain after he breastfeeds. Given all of this, I’m wondering if we should go ahead with a tongue tie release? Is it truly necessary or could it be an unnecessary procedure?

Yes definitely do it! My little boy was exactly the same and had his released at 5.5 weeks old and he’s a different boy now at 5 months old! Check tongue function, everything might ‘look’ ok but might be worth checking anyway

Thanks Laura. Planning to go ahead, wish me luck 🤞

Hi how was your experience with the tongue tie procedure? Also the midwife booked us an appointment for my little ones tongue tie but he is feeding effectively and wonder if I still need to go through with it please help

Hi @Melodinot sure what your reason is for considering the procedure, but here’s my experience: The procedure itself was pretty smooth—just a few seconds to snip the tie, and baby was put to breastfeed immediately after. Outcome: The same latching issues persist—still a clicking sound and lots of gas! 🥲 No real change in feeding so far, except now he can push his tongue over his lip, whereas earlier he could only stick it out but not past his lip. It’s made me wonder if some of these issues might be more behavioral than tie-related. The wound has healed now. Do I think the procedure was necessary? While I haven’t seen immediate benefits, I felt that if the tie was restricting tongue movement and could potentially cause issues down the line, it was worth addressing. I was really concerned about the pain it might cause beforehand, but the procedure itself didn’t seem too painful. That said, he was definitely fussier and quieter for a couple of days afterward.
