Toilet training

My little one is 21 months, he will be 2 in July, he has recently started telling me he needs the toilet before doing it in his nappy, I’m taking this as a sign for me to be able to start toilet training, I feel like I have no idea what my next steps are with toilet training, I am looking to just go straight to the toilet and miss a potty, I have a downstairs bathroom and I’m in the process of getting a toddler seat to go on top of this with some steps, does anyone have any tips on teaching them how to use this and to encourage him to go on it, I feel a bit lost and unsure with how to actually proceed with this.

I’ve just potty trained my 25 month old started 2 weeks ago on Monday she’s been accident free since Day 5, we used a potty but we don’t have a downstairs loo and I didn’t want her getting upset by having an accident or needing to go and me not being able to get her upstairs in time etc but I have over the weekend started to remove the potty from downstairs and take her up to use the steps on the toilet and she’s transitioning just fine so I just think do what you think is best for your situation. Potty’s are closer to the ground so they are meant to make it easier for pooing and less scary for them but again I think it’s just what works best for you and your child! I used a book ‘Potty Training Magic’ for guidance I really just let my little lady lead the way. We had lots of upset and tantrums on Day 2&3 which made me think she wasn’t ready but then Day 4 something just clicked. She wasn’t fussed really with the sticker charts that the book/everyone recommends either.

We ended up getting rid of the charts and offered a little sweet for a wee/poo during the first week but this also didn’t last long. She stopped asking for the sweetie so I stopped giving it her. I’ve been very lucky and she’s just took to it so well! Good luck, your little one is still so young so if it doesn’t work don’t put pressure on yourself. Obviously I’m not expert lol but feel free to send me a message xxx

@Emily omg amazing thank you so much, I like to jump at the littlest signs and constantly challenge my little one, I’ve put him in pull ups through out the day to get him use to them and understanding they can be pulled up and down, see he goes to the bathroom with me because it’s just me through the day so I think he’s started to clock on that when he needs the toilet that’s where he goes because he’s been starting to tell me before he does anything in his nappy, it’s just a big step I don’t want to start too early with it and scare him with it. I am going to do the whole rewards system with it, I think he’ll respond better to that so thank you so much!!
