When to stop pumping

Hello, I am a FTM so I really have no clue what I’m doing. I have had SEVERAL clogged ducts and the most I have ever produced was when I got 5oz all together after 6hrs and it took a month to get to that point after a clogged duct. About 70% of my right breast was inflamed and wouldn’t drain and it’s the worst feeling. I recently got one again and mentally I cannot do this anymore. I have been struggling with PPD really bad and my baby will not nurse, it’s stressful for the both of us, she just screams because at first I wanted to make sure she was eating enough so I was exclusively pumping. I’m lack of a better term, she got lazy with the bottle because they’re easier to drink from. Anyway, my supply goes right back down to maybe 2oz if I was lucky all together after 3 hours. I’m sorry for the rambling but I guess I just need advice as to when I can completely stop? Right now I am pumping twice a day when I get up and when I go to sleep. Now I am only getting 2oz total if I’m lucky when I pump. Is it okay to completely stop pumping at this point? Should I go down to once a day before completely stopping? I need advice. I don’t know what to do but so ready to not be disappointed every time I pump.

Sorry for your pain and disappointment. Breastfeeding has so many challenges! Everytime I have stopped breastfeeding I have ended up engorged for a while no matter how little I was feeding prior. I’m not sure that’s the case for everyone. I eased pain with ice packs and also used cabbage leaves. I would say if you are ready to stop just be prepared for a little more discomfort ahead.

How long are you pumping for both times at the moment? Personally for me I found hand expressing for about 5-10 mins once a day helped slow my supply almost instantly and I only did it for about 3 days and my milk was pretty much gone except for a small leak every-time I showered but that eased up after 2 weeks. They may feel achy and inflamed (I found it hard to hold my LO close for the first day as it hurt to touch them) but cold compresses will be your best friend!

Twice a day is unfortunately not enough (if you dont breastfeed or if you baby only drinks small amounts from the boob) I had a good supply, but had to pump 10 minutes every 2 hrs. Its exhausting. After a while that didnt work anymore either, so I started skipping pumps and then stopping. Formula is more than enough for your little one. No need to feel bad or anything. But if you really wanna pump then the advice given by medicals is pumping 10 mins every 2 hrs to keep the supply going.

Don’t feel bad. What’s important is that baby is getting enough milk which could be breastmilk or formula. If breastfeeding is getting overwhelming, then switch to formula but if you want to keep giving her breastmilk, you’ll have to pump more often which can be stressful. Baby’s are different, mine prefers the boobs to bottles but a lot of babies choose bottles over boobs cause it’s easier. So if your baby is sucking less, you’ll will need to replace the 3-4hrs feeds with pumping just to maintain your supply. Whatever you decide, you’re a still good mom. Just don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself. Raising a baby is hard enough. Sending you hugs!
