When to buy breast pump

Hi Ladies! I’m 30 weeks today 🥳 I’m really hoping to exclusively breast feed, especially for the first couple of months… I’d like to pump so Dad can feed baby girl too. When’s the best time to buy an electric breast pump? Anytime from now? Or after baby’s born? Which one is best recommended? I’m a FTM so this is all new to me. Any advice is massively appreciated. Thank you 🩷

Whenever it's on offer. I bought mine at like 20 weeks or something and just stuck it in the cupboard 🤗

Have you started to use yours yet? Would you recommend it?🩷

Not at least until your supply has established. Pumping before then can cause you some problems. Presenting baby with a bottle could also come with it's own problems, primarily bottle preference. Highly suggest speaking to an IBCLC before birth to arm yourself with some BF knowledge from a professional in the field.

Not to worry you or say this will happen! But a few hospitals don’t let you leave unless they know you have a pump if breastfeeding isn’t clearly established. This didn’t happen to me, but it happened to three women in my NCT group who were at 2 different local hospitals. I would suggest having a cheaper manual pump ready for this reason. I really like the Medela hand pump and I used that over the electric one whenever I had to pump. But in the first few weeks, I just used collection cups and the haakaa ladybug for letdown. I had to collect expressed milk to do top ups for my son because he had a tongue tie and lost weight initially. I bought a hands free electric on a recommendation and never got on with it. Spent a small fortune replacing parts to see if that was the issue and it wasn’t. If I were to do it again, I wouldn’t bother buying a hands free electric personally!

I’m hoping to do the same. I’m going to buy the Medela hand pump to use initially, and if I switch to more expressed than breast fed milk I’ll probably invest in a more expensive electric one x
