In some situations they keep the claim open but do a zero payment. But if they do close it reapply when eligible again. But best to avoid an overpayment by letting them know.
@Eloïse when do you think I should inform them?
I’m just curious why you don’t qualify for maternity pay?
My partner received a one off payment from his old job and we just got £0 payment from uc that month then it went back to normal the following month. I let the lady on the phone know but she said it doesn’t matter it just means you don’t get a payment for that month x
@Siobhan OP said mat pay had finished so I would assume terms in maternity policy- my work do 3 months 90% pay, 6 months £184 a week and then additional 3 months unpaid if you choose to have it.
I’d pop a note in your journal explaining the situation, they’ll advise what will happen :)
I had the same holiday payment from my job once I quit after mat leave while on UC and it was like 2k so I just got a £0 payment that month then the month after it went back to normal but I just wrote in the journal explaining and they said it was fine x
@Siobhan I don’t know I just assumed as I’ve been off work for almost a year.. would I be eligible for maternity allowance for second baby?
Yep I was 😅 I went on maternity leave 4th Jan 24 technically ended 23rd November 24 (I didn’t get anything in October as I was taking the full year but then found out I was pregnant again) I was then paid all my holiday which took me to 4th January 25 I then started maternity leave again and will get 33 or 39 weeks SMP can’t actually remember what it is but you can definitely do back to back maternity ☺️
You just don’t get the first 6 weeks at 90% but tbh I was happy with anything.
They get any wages directly from HMRC so no you dont need to inform them as holiday pay is treated like wages. You get 6 months with getting 0 from them before they close your claim so 1 month of holiday pay won’t close it down x
@Siobhan awh I’m currently in a similar situation thank you for this info.. going to get my matb1 tomorrow and apply finger crossed 🥹
@Bex oohhh ok I understand perfect
I thought I’d just have to quit when I found out but luckily the midwife told me to contact citizens advice. My work didn’t even question it when I told them it was my boss who told me what I was entitled to and worked out the best way was to bring me off maternity and pay me my holiday for the year then start maternity again😅 there’s a year and 18 days between my girls.

@Siobhan awh mine will be 13 months apart! Very nervous!! How you finding it
Admittedly hard 😅 but that’s mostly because my newest addition has had a few problems and is allergic to sleep 🫣 I got lucky with my first. At first my eldest was a bit like who is this and wasn’t keen but now the youngest is smiling etc she’s starting to get interested so I know them having a close gap will be lovely when they’re older. Plus it’s now all out of the way 😅
Definitely let them know to avoid overpayment.
