Stopping sterilising bottles

I know best practice is to sterilise bottles, dummies etc until 12months …. Has anyone stopped sooner? Seems crazy to carry on when their hands / objects / weaning equipment in their mouth constantly? Thoughts …. 💭

We stopped when she stopped having formula x

I just put everything under hot water, and he hasn't gotten sick

You’re meant to sterilise until you stop giving formula due to all the bacteria. My lil one is on cows milk but I still sterilise just to be safe.

I stopped around 4 months. My baby had had formula since day one

It's the bacteria in formula which is why you have to sterilise the bottles but I dont do the dummies unless they've fallen on the floor outside

I can’t really speak on it since I breastfeed but I just use extremely hot (steaming) water and soap and scrub everything by hand including the insides of dummies/straws etc

It’s nothing to do with germs like them touching all sorts etc it’s to do with bacteria in formula so it’s really important to continue to sterilize until you move off formula onto cows milk and then you can just wash them as normal x

PhD in microbiology here 👋 you need to sterilise anything that milk (pumped or formula) will sit in for any prolonged length of time. This is because formula is a great food source for baby and for bacteria, so any bacteria present will replicate quickly. The conditions of baby milk (moist, warm, nutrient rich) are perfect for the growth of many dangerous pathogens. Breast milk is not sterile, nor is tap water.

I make sure I wash the bottles really well I only sterilized when he was a couple weeks old. He’s almost 11 months and haven’t had no issues. He also drinks breast milk from the bottles not formula so idk if that makes a difference.

@Lisa kindly disregard my response 💀

It depends what country you are in. The UK has very very different guidelines to other European countries. Check what they suggest in the country you are in ☺️

I sterilize all her bottles and my pumping gear (7 months old) and will occasionally toss her Pacifiers in there. But mostly I just wash the Pacifiers and teethers...I don't sterilize her spoons or plates so figure no need to sterilize the Pacifiers.

I’ve never sterilized bottles .. wash with very hot water and soap … but mostly BF
