Weaning

At what age did you start weaning your lo? My lb no longer sleeps through the night and I think it’s because his milk isn’t keeping him full anymore? For context he is 17 weeks, has 5/6 oz bottles and has slept through since he was 11/12 weeks 😊

17weeks is far too early to start weaning without a medical reason. Babies stomachs aren’t ready for solid foods until 6months. I would look up the 4month sleep regression as that what it sounds like. Good luck!

My baby was 6 months last week and I haven’t started yet. He doesn’t seem ready yet

Mine was the same! My sleep consultant told me that anytime babies sleep through the night before 4 ish months that the babies r just pranking you. Their sleep cycle changes around the four month mark, mine did at 3.5 months. After a couple weeks it should regulate back, he’s probably having trouble linking the cycles together that’s why he’s waking up. Also make sure he’s warm enough because mine was waking up more frequently and then I realized that maybe she’s a little chilly and I got a thicker sleep sack and it reduced her wakings from 5/6 to 2 wakings.

I mean they start baby food pouches from 4months old so… 🤷‍♀️ 17 weeks isnt that far off, hang in there! Also, sleep regression starts from around this age so dont get too worried about it!

You can absolutely increase his milk intake. I’d wait until 6 months to wean, due to guidance (despite them making products from 4 months, it still isn’t healthy for the underdeveloped gut). From that age, my daughter was on around 8oz bottles. We got up to 10oz bottles by 5 months and started weaning at 6m.

Thanks ladies!! I was planning on starting BLW at 6 months anyway as I don’t want to be giving him pouches, but I’ve just read soooooo many contradictory things so wanted to ask on here with fellow mommas 🙋‍♀️ I figured it was possibly sleep regression as well, he’s only waking once so I’m really lucky 😂

17 weeks is roughly 4 months which when the 4 month regression starts.

He’s still pretty young is he on formula or bm? If formula 6-7oz is normal per feeding and for breastmilk 3-5oz is normal per feeding every 3-4hrs but sometimes babies need more bm it just depends.

6 months. Maybe try up his bedtime bottle an ounce? Could also be going through sleep regression.

Sleep changes are very common, they go through multiple sleep regressions so could be that, but you can totally up bedtime milk by an oz. Definitely would never recommend weaning before 6 months, it can cause so many issues later in life, even if brands say from 4 months. You may find in a few weeks he goes back to normal, my son is 1 now and went through this quite a few times xx

@Kaleigh he’s on formula and has 5-6 oz every 2-3 hours and I’ve just recently started trying him on a 7oz bed time bottle but he only drinks about 4oz of it before falling asleep 🙈

With my boys we did a bigger bottle before bed, 7-9oz depending what he’ll take

Milk has more calories than the food you’d be giving him anyway Give more milk if he’s hungry

@Stef legally they’re allowed to write this, it doesn’t make it right…

@Beth well mine all started on things like cucumber and banana by this age and they’re all fine

@Stef I never said they wouldn’t be fine, it’s just not recommended, simply because their bodies are not ready

@Beth just looking for someone to have a spat with? If it was wrong then each of their health visitors/nurses would have said so too. Nothing wrong with it, just dont be dropping bottles because of it. Babies need their milk, whatever their milk is, until they are 1 at the very least. Just trust your gut, you’re a mom for a reason girl!

@Stef who said I was having a spat? It’s just common knowledge unless recommended by a paediatrician x

I would increase his milk intake for sure.

17 weeks is far too early, despite the food companies legally being allowed to market from 4 months. It’s simply a money making ploy. It’s more likely a sleep regression. There is also no correlation between weaning and better sleep, if anything it might make it worse because they’ll be uncomfortable due to the heavy food in their stomach that they’re digestive system is not yet developed enough to cope with.

@Raene during the day you can try 7oz every 3-4 hours that way by the bed time bottle it’s been 3-4 hours & he’ll likely drink more of it

Please if you can, try to hold off weaning until 6 months if you can help it, as it causes digestive issues later in life because their systems aren't developed enough for food yet. It's totally normal for babies to go through sleep regression cycles and wake up during the night.

@Shelby don’t worry, I wasn’t planning on it until he was 6mo 😊 just wanted some info!
