Applying for jobs when pregnant

So I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant and trying to look for a new job for personal reasons. Has anyone applied for jobs early in pregnancy and got them? I’m worried I won’t get a new job due to being pregnant

They can’t discriminate you however you won’t be eligible for maternity pay from the employer (I think). You’ll have to get it from the government 😊

I applied for a job that I got, I didn't tell them i was pregnant, they legally don't have to know until your 28weeks then you can tell them. I changed jobs within the same company 🙃

If you need maternity pay then it's best to stay where you are. Go on leave and apply while you're on leave and quit your old job once you're gone.

Girl yes, twice. The first time i was pregnant I got fired right when I found out. I started a side hustle business that was going well but when I found out I was pregnant again, I knew I needed fulltime and benefits so i started applying. I got a fully remote job when I was 4 months pregnant with number 2. You definitely do not tell them you are pregnant. I found out after I was hired that I was qualified for 4 months paid leave so they would not have hired me. Don't let them know, I got passed up for plenty before I told them. Even if you think you're showing, never mention it.

I agree with @J.S. Jaees Do NOT mention it until you've gotten hired and have some time in. Otherwise, while they are not supposed to discriminate, they also may pass up on hiring you even if you are a strong candidate because you'll need to take some time off soon when your baby arrives. Edit to add: I've also been passed up before due to being pregnant and was told to apply again after I've given birth by a recruiter calling me to schedule an interview.

It’s simple. You don’t tell them.

Isn’t it sad that we have to hide this as women? 😟 This is why DEI matters. 🙌🏼

@Renae I'm sorry, but if DEI existed 3 years ago, it definitely did not help me in my job search and acquisition

Yeah, I’d find out their maternity policy of the new job before leaving your current job. You may not get one or as long l one. You’ll get fmla leave but may not get pay. Or see what your current job has and stick it out and look after you have the baby.

So you absolutely don’t have to tell them, but I’ll share my experience. I suspect it varies by industry too. I lost my job at 8 weeks pregnant when my employer went bankrupt... no severance, my partner was impacted too, +insurance was gone, so I had to find something fast. I chose to tell prospective employers I was pregnant, but only after the final round (but pre offer.) I disclosed to the recruiter by email after, not in-situ in an interview. The way I saw it, someone who wouldn’t employ me due to pregnancy is probably someone who would find a way to oust me once they found out (or on mat leave). So I chanced it, and for sure I think I was passed over for at least 1 job because of it, and another made me feel like I was ‘lucky they would still consider me’… but my now-employer didn’t bat an eyelid. And that has been a solid green flag for their company culture, beyond pregnancy - as a working mum life is chaos, but they treat accommodations as a fact of life. Good luck!
