My grandpa was called Sidney (Sid), so that’s who I think of. Born in 1914, so yeah, definitely a war time name…. but I’ve never thought of it as an “old man” name.
i'm also in the UK and have similar connotations - vintage style name, similar vibe to names like Stanley, Russell or Wilfred etc. really fits well with the trend of vintage names that is popular atm. i can totally imagine a little boy named Sidney - Sid is such a cute nickname! 💙 as for the gender thing, Sydney i would assume was a girl's name, but if i saw it spelled Sidney i would assume it was a boy. 🤷🏻♂️
I think of Kelly Osborne now as that’s her son’s name! Also his dad is from slipknkot and called Sidney. Also Sid vicious From the sex pistols. So it’s got some rock vibes to it aswell lol
All I can think of is the movie Scream. 🙈
Makes me think of Sidney Poitier
As a Sydney, I’ve only ever met one male Sidney who is about my fathers age. Even he said he doesn’t love it but he was a jr. I think it’s pretty uncommon for a boy these days and has taken on a more feminine vibe. Tbh, in response to saying his name many people would probably say “oh that’s my great grandpa’s name!” Which isn’t necessarily bad but that’s the response I grew up with and I was just like ok.. thanks lol
I see it as more of a girl name. I don’t know any boys names Sidney
I think of Sid from Ice Age or Sidney Prescott from Scream. It’s a lovely name for either gender though.
This is so helpful thanks everyone! Feeling like maybe there’s a bit of a UK (more vintage/trad making a comeback vibes) vs US (more old man spelling of girls name Sydney/pop culture vibes) divide! Interestingly it’s kind of a family name for us but it’s a male ancestor born in the late 1800s who spelt it “Sydney” - I imagine he was probably very cool/ahead of his time then 🤣 I also think of Sid from The Bear but don’t know if she was Sid or Syd!
Old man’s name
I'm from the UK and generally think of Sidney as and old man / wartime name (which is a good thing). But for Sid I think of the sloth from Ice Age or the bad kid from Toy Story x
I really like Sidney/Sid I think it feels vintage, strong and unusual enough where there won’t be 5 in a class but recognisable and classic. I also like Sid as a nickname, the only connections for me are Sid from skins and Sid from ice age, so no bad connections with it. I personally don’t think of it as a girls name at all. (UK 🇬🇧)
Sidney James from Carry On movies.
Sidney Crosby - exceptionally talented Canadian ice hockey player

My husband (33yo) is a Sidney and I think he likes that it’s coming back around. I know of a few little boys in my area called Sidney – no girls though!
I think of both the Sex Pistols (love them) and a bunch of old guys in Beverly Hills. I'm not kidding. Every time I've been to Beverly Hills, an old guy named Sid has flirted with me. So I like the name a lot.
I think Sidney / Sid is cute (also from the UK). As above I'd have thought Sidney was a boy and Sydney was a girl.
I gave my son the middle name Sidney after my grandfather (who was born in UK), I think it’s such a cool name, any kid called Sid is gonna be the cool kid in class
Or do you see it as more of a girl’s name these days 🤔 FWIW - I’m much less keen on the spelling Sydney and would definitely be looking to spell it with an “i”
