Why would the health visitor tell you to not give them milk during the day. They still rely on milk as their main nutrition and it's up to your babies on whether they want to drop the milk not the health visitor. Do what you think is right. My son is still having his milk during the day and having 3 meals a day and multiple snacks
Following. I just portion up a big load and I have the rest at the moment 🤣. Are they not suppose to still have 2-3 bottles during the day? My lb has 3 6oz bottles during the day and some nights will have 2 bottles
My 9mo probably has around 5 bottles a day (6oz first thing when he wakes up and then 4oz per bottle) along with 2 meals and a snack. He does have large portions of food though - I make up about 8-9oz of porridge with fruit for breakfast and he has 2 baby pouches + yogurt for dinner. He is a big boy though, he’a 25.2lbs x
Wow so many different comments. In regards to my health visitor my son is 21lbs and my daughter is 19lbs and the HV said that they are just over what they should be and I’m giving them a bottle or 7oz in the morning and then an hour or two after giving them breakfast and then lunch and then a bottle and then dinner and then a bottle before bed and she said it’s like giving them double meals but then I said the NHS website says don’t give snacks give milk if they’re a bit hungry and she said give them fruit. But I’m just so like I don’t even know what to do lol x
@C 🩷 feed your child what you want, your children will have growth spurts so them being 'over the weight they should be' is ridiculous. My son is probably about that weight, he hasn't been weighed in a long time. It's not like you are feeding your children junk and sugar. You are feeding them food and their milk so what if they put on a little more weight then standard or average for their age. I think HV seems to forget that all babies are different. You can't put us all in the same category
I agree saying they are too big is crazy. Surely a baby can never be too big. Also as others have said milk is still their main source of nutrition and by 10 months I’m sure they are only meant to drop one milk feed
Milk is much better for them than fruit! I would follow what the NHS site says, as that is fully researched, rather than her opinion. I don't really believe in babies being overweight, they will lose it all once they're on the move.
@Elizabeth Aneiros exactly this! Milk is their main nutrition and portion sizes should be their fist size. Food is for play and texture atm. If they are having 3 meals then great but if they are not then no big worries
@Dal exactly, my son is on 3 big-ish meals and snacks plus all his normal feeds but then again I have a hungry piggy baby 🤣 but there is nothing wrong if your child is on 3 meals or 1 meal a day it all depends on the child
I didn’t have the meeting yet, mine is next month. My baby il 20lbs almost 21. She is still getting breastfed 3 times a day plus 2 bottles… ops 🤭 I think I’ll hear the same complaint
@Elizabeth Aneiros honestly i dont know if these HVs are trained wrong or enforce their own agendas. I dont know how often they get assessed either. I breastfeed on demand. Sometimes it’s 5 feeds through the day and other days it’s 9. Just like as adults sometimes we don’t want full on meals and other days we are famished. My LO is under the weather atm so he is nursing for food, comfort and pain relief.
@Dal half the time I don't think they are fully trained. They do everything by a textbook and if you don't fall under that then there is a problem. I'm also breastfeeding on demand and everyday varies and I think that's where HV's are completely lost
The UK is so behind in its breastfeeding knowledge and support. I couldn’t breastfeed my 1st due to lack of knowledge and support and I was gutted. My LO is due to start nursery soon and the nursery have told me he needs to start using bottles or he won’t be able to attend! My HV told me at 6m to introduce formula as “a working mother” my child will suffer when he is away from me. Then reading what the OP has written just ticked me off more

Honestly HV seem to give the worst advice in regards to weaning! Babies should still be having a minimum of 24 ounces a day u too they’re one years old. I think up to 32 ounces a day roughly is recommended (although every baby is individual so some will have more). Stick to following nhs and health organisations advice, and honestly I’d report the poor advice being given as it’s the only way they’re going to stop telling mums incorrect facts x
@Natasha the NHS site actually says 14 Oz https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/weaning/what-to-feed-your-baby/10-to-12-months/
That’s what I thought , I’m going to speak to my old health visitor and see what she suggests
Babies stomaches are as big as their hands. We tend to over feed them or over think. Take it at babies pace milk is their main source of food until they are 1. They will eventually reduce feeds themselves when they eat food. Dont over complicate it offer them food first and top up with milk ☺️
Eeek so confused at all of the conflicting advice we all get. Feel like it’s harder when breastfeeding as I never know how much milk he’s having. Could we share some portion size pics please? I feel like my portions are too small but tbh my boy never seems to finish what I give. He does breastfeed frequently tho. Born 27 July.
following bc i’m in the same position x
