How to overproduce

I know some people are just born blessed. With my first I dealt with bad PPD, so I definitely slacked my responsibilities with pumping on time. This ontop of not feeding myself the best made it so I only breastfed a little over two months. I’m due again in august this year and I am determined to be the breastfeeding mom I aimed to be before. So all tips!!! What you eat, how much, pumps, schedule. And if anyone had used the haakaa shell I’d love to know your honest opinion

You don’t want to “overproduce”. It comes with a lot of clogged ducts, engorgement, pain, sometimes mastitis and all these things can affect your supply. You want a good supply which is great. The best way to do it is to nurse on demand and often. From birth, have baby latch writhing the first hour of birth. From then, nurse baby often! So lots of skin to skin. You don’t have to pump to have a good supply but pumping occasionally when baby is sleeping can help. Pumping can get in the way of you just nursing baby on demand which is the best way to do it because babies know how to empty the breast well. The more you effectively empty your breast, the better it will seek to refill. The Hakka is great to catch extra milk or pump. Diet is important. Preferably nutrient dense foods. But water & sleep are equally important. Sleep is a huge part of milk production so getting 6hrs a day minimum is helpful. Breastmilk is 80% water so definitely drinking lots of water daily is good.

@✨Wis 🇭🇹 Thank you SO much for all of this!!!!❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼

@Sydney you’re welcome! I would also add to look for an IBCLC from now, covered by insurance too, so that when you give birth, if you have any challenges, youll be able to contact her right away and not have to go through looking for one and getting an appointment asap

This is my 4th time trying to breastfeed. My first 3 I didn't produce enough and stopped within a month. This time around I'm an overproducer. The things I've done this time are to make sure I had the right size flange inserts, started pumping as much as possible in the hospital as well as nursing her (it made my milk come in the next day) I carry my hospital cup around constantly filled with ice water, and use lube for my pump. I use coconut oil and nipple cream and haven't had super painful nipps. I also didn't skip my middle of the night pumps before 12 weeks to keep my supply up. The haaka is awesome for when baby is on one side nursing. Also make sure you choose a really good pump with decent suction. I'm not really good with schedules because I have 3 kids but I'm down to pumping 5-7 times per day with one MOTN pump. I've had to very slowly space them out and drop pumps to not lose my supply. I use to produce 70 oz per day in the beginning but now at 12 wpp I produce 40-46 oz.

In the beginning up to 12 weeks try to regularly pump every 2-3 hours and no longer than every 4 hours. Don't worry about spacing them out. I personally unintentionally started spacing them out little by little by hitting snooze because I'm exhausted or by leaving the house without my pump and being gone too long sometimes. My supply semi regulated sometime between 3-4 weeks where I didn't feel engorged anymore and then fully regulated between 11-12 weeks. I take Moringa, and Black seed oil because I read it's good for supply. I also take Sunflower Lethicen and I swear when I started taking it I had a small supply increase. Fenugreek can be known to increase supply but it tanked mine completely with my first and does that for a lot of others also. Also avoid anything mint. That also can tank supply. Anything oatmeal and coconut water or milk can help increase supply for some. But stay drinking TONS of water. Good Luck! I'm sorry this is all over the place. I hope it helps.

@Tiffany Tons of useful info!! Thank you!
