EVERYTHING in the mouth

My son is a 4/1 baby and since developing his pincer grasp he has been putting EVERYTHING in his mouth. Now I KNOW it is normal for kids to taste their world to learn but this is different. I'm talking singular strands of hair, a grain of cat litter, a wood chip, a spec of fuzz, a crumb. He is brilliant. He started walking at 10 months. He is running now. He can say over 30 words and KNOWS SO MUCH. He is even using the potty. I'm wondering if he is under stimulated? I do plan edible taste-safe activities, baby crafts, outings, and try to get him to play with toys, but he'd rather go SPECK BY SPECK AND EAT EVERY TINY THING off the floor. It's really getting to me. I'm so overstimulated because I'm trying to just prep food, not cook just get it warm, cut and plate. I will hear "eww yucky" which is him finding something from the floor and that preceeds him eating it. What can I do? I've been a preschool teacher and nanny and NEVER dealt with this to this extent. When will this phase end? I'm so paranoid about him eating all these disgusting little things. I feel like we can't even play at the park. Every wood chip, piece of trash, bug, into the mouth. What can I do?

My baby just turned 1 but she does this too. Thankfully she doesn’t swallow what she puts in her mouth but she needs to taste EVERYTHING. Picks it up and has no time to think about it but her first instinct is “in the mouth”. She sometimes will even grasp at air and put it in her mouth as if something is there. I assumed it was normal enough and that she just uses her sense of taste before anything else. One of my husbands coworkers said both their kids (who are older now) did this but in the nose! So if you find out something is actually up let me know because I assumed it was her normal!

I feel like my kiddo and yours are taking it to the next level. I'm curious to see what the consensus is here with other same aged kiddos. My floor is vacuumed and mopped DAILY at a minimum, and still, my son eats every spec of dust. I'm glad I'm not alone. It's just stressful, as I'm sure you know. Lol at the air omg.

Yes I’m curious! She always finds something. She is obsessed with regular food though and has always acted like she wanted what we ate since she was 3 months I think so maybe her love for food has something to do with it

My babygirl was born 4/11, and does all of this as well. We always say she has the BEST eyesight because she sees even the smallest spec on the floor! We let her run around the house to explore but it’s a constant struggle with her finding random things and put it In her mouth. Oh and she will also run away from you if you try to grab whatever it is from her 🤣

@Lynne my son is the same! He is a fantastic eater.

My baby does this too!! Drives me freakin nuts 😂😂
