Forceful letdown breastfeeding

Anyone else have a forceful letdown? My milk comes out so fast my baby ends up coughing and choking and will usually unlatch. We both get really frustrated with it. I have tried laid back feeding and side lying feeding but it’s still really fast, anyone else have this? When does it get better?

Yes, on my left side it sprays out like crazy even in side lying! With my first baby it wasn't that bad, and seemed to calm down after 3 months.

Try laying on your back flat completely and place the baby on your chest with the head tilted towards either breast. I discovered this by accident and actually works very well for feeding. Also bonus points tummy time 🤣

I have this too with both breasts and no way of feeding helps it. There is such a thing called 'breast milkshake' technique. Where you gently massage or compress your breast to mix the foremilk & hand milk. Otherwise you could try expressing a little bit first to get rid of the foremilk x

How old is your baby? I have the same issue but it seems that my baby (5 weeks +4) got used to it eventually and it's not causing issues anymore. I also tend to lean back when BF. Hope this helps 😊

I had this with one but it has got better and settled down. We are 8.5 weeks now x

I have this as well, I use the haakaa silicone hand held pump to express a little bit of milk on both sides before a feed so it slows it down a little bit x

I had the same issue. I pumped for 2 mins before feeding my lo and that helped a LOT

@Marcela She’s 6 weeks now, and still struggling with it 😩. @Helen when I lay all the way back my boob seems to squash her nose and then she unlatches.

Yesss I have this too. I let her latch and when the letdown comes and she unlatches, I hand express for like 30s and once the spraying has stopped, i will let her latch again and it seems to be working

The elvie curve or haka is great to just let a little bit off your breast before so it’s not as strong

I will use the haakaa and express a little before feeding. Will this increase my milk supply even more?

I have a super forceful let down. I let baby start off so it begins then I unlatch him and soak the first bit in a muslin (bcause Haakas increase supply etc) and then I let him relatch. Otherwise he coughs and chokes on it.

I'm struggling with this at the moment, we are just 7 weeks pp. We were doing the laying down thing but she struggled latching and was clicking bad. We are sitting more up now so she can control it better, I stop when the let down is too much, burp her, and then put her back on. I get like 2/3 fast let downs a feed and way worse on the right side it's such a mare!

I usually hand express to ease this, just a few pumps to get rid of the forceful watery milk and then baby gets the rest!

I am really struggling with this too. My little boy is 5 weeks now. I went to infant feeding support and they suggested hand expressing or just passively let the the milk prior to feed and then lean back during feeds. They said they would avoid pumping as this would make the problem worse . So far it’s working 70% of the time

I found if I let my baby suck till I started to let down then popped them off and pushed a finger onto the end of my nipple that slowed the flow a bit.

Try pumping for 10 mins before feeding or hand expressing. I found this helped for me as lying back didn’t

I have been trying hand express before but find that sometimes it helps and sometimes couple of minutes into feed it starts spraying again

@Helena I found it didn’t help all of the time either. I did find though that it was only a problem for a week so hopefully it will calm down for you soon
