Has anyone dealt with dog with resource guarding and babies/kids?

Our dog is 4 years old Cockerpoo and we have a 9 month old LG, recently our dog have started to jump on other dogs (resource guarding toys etc) and she has done light growls when the baby pets her and this morning she snarled/growled more aggressively than usual(baby is safe). My partner is considering getting rid of the dog because we’re worried one day she’ll hurt the baby, just need some advice and success stories please 🙏🏼

Goes without saying baby is number 1 priority and getting rid of the dog is last resort. And please be kind as I’m already so emotional about it. TIA

One of my dogs is known to resource guard, we have baby gates and he’s not allowed in the room with the baby - but he can see us. If they are both in the same room the dog is on a long indoor training lead so we can easily keep him under control.

do you let them interact at all? x

Yes, but only when there’s no stimulants or things around he can guard, and always give him loads of praise when he’s near her and being good. She’s 9 months old now and we’ve had no issues - but it is hard work to keep on top of it, but you soon get used to it, like making sure we close the baby gate when we go into the other room etc - you can definitely make it work

thank you, this is reassuring. We’ve just added another baby gate and going to keep on top of treats and praises when dog is doing well and generally just making sure the baby doesn’t get too close as she also is grabbing hair/fur now and crawling.

Def get an indoor training lead too! It’s just a very long thin lead - just extra peace of mind that you can pull dog away if she gets too close xx
