Starting weaning advice please

We have just started tasting a few veg purées and so far he has screwed his face up at most of them and just sort of moved them around his mouth (assuming he’s swallowed) How long do we do this for? Will he eventually take bigger mouthfuls or how have people transitioned to full “meals” ?

Yeah at this age they’ll just taste it. It’s normal for them to make funny faces, they’ve only ever known milk so even if something seems bland to us, it’s a huge burst of flavour to them. My boy has been taking purées for a few weeks now but we haven’t reduced milk feeds as that’s where he gets his nutrients, food is just for fun and getting a taste for things just now x

@Sophie thank you. So just carry on with the purées and one veg at a time for now you think?

Yeah that’s what I’m doing, just exploring flavours x

It will be slow progress but when I weaned my first I did a course run by our local health visitors and they were so good - they said the aim is to have them having 3 meals and 2 snacks by 1 but that's built up over 6 months of weaning. So you can introduce one food with a usual milk time to begin with (different each day and offer before milk) and as they get more confident with their food you will be able to slowly give them a bit more/a few different foods at a time and they'll eat enough to replace that milk. Once they're confident with that you can add in another meal and when they're happy with that again you can add in another! I found breakfast or lunch were the best meals to begin with as they're more alert/hungry at those times. Each baby will be different so just go at their pace!
