Breastfeeding Anxiety

Any other mums terrified about not being able to breastfeed/not getting enough milk out to feed baby and not knowing? Obviously I know I've still got time. But as I am getting further and further through pregnancy I keep getting more and more anxious about not being able to produce enough milk or something and I know only time will tell but I want to breastfeed and I'm just terrified of my body letting me down. Anyone else feeling this and have any advice on how to overcome it x

I breastfed my first baby for 19 months (she’s 21 months now). I knew I wanted to breastfeed from the moment I got pregnant, tbh if nothing else, I just couldn’t imagine having to get up to make bottles in the middle of the night haha. I was lucky that I was a massive oversupplier, however I did have the odd dips in milk production around my period. If you want to, you can pump and keep a BM supply in the freezer, alongside breastfeeding, and then if your supply does dip unexpectedly, you’ve got milk ready that you know baby will take to xx

Yeah I do plan to pump too, I think I'm just worried about not producing enough when my son is born. Formula isn't an option for me (I have no disrespect to anyone who chooses to use it, just I've always known before I even had children that I wanted to breastfeed them) I know they don't need to drink very much per feed when they're first born but I just worry about the first few weeks you know. Like whilst milk is coming in properly x

Yes, I am having this anxiety. I’m first time mum, I want to BF knowing the benefits for both myself and the baby. I’ve seen that some people had some discharge even in the second trimester. But I’ve not had any discharge whatsoever. So I keep thinking whether I’ll be able to rely on these to feed my baby..

@Zoya I'm the same! But have also spoken with other mums who got no discharge until their baby was here but good to know I'm not alone in feeling anxious

Totally get that that anxiety. I had colostrum start to leak at 17 weeks in my first pregnancy, to the point I was able to collect it without squeezing any out in my third trimester. This pregnancy, I’m 29+4 and have only had the odd few drops so far. I spoke to my midwife about it as I was wondered if this would mean I wouldn’t be able to BF my second, but she said that even if you have no leaking before baby is born, the oxytocin after you give birth will trigger milk production x

This is reassuring thank you x

@Bethany Nature is wonderful.. hope the oxytocin kicks in and does its job.. thanks for sharing.

@Zoya thank you. And me too! I would love to bf my second baby too. It’s just a case of waiting and trusting in our bodies x

My advise is don’t pin all hopes on it and go with the flow, I was adamant in breastfeeding my first born but my milk didn’t come in until 10 days after he was born in which case he refused the boob despite professional help… I was so disappointed like my body let me down, just go with the flow and hope for the best x

@Francesca this is helpful, thank you. I really hope this isn't the case because I really do want to breastfeed and I've not bought any formula or anything
