Older sibling separation anxiety

I’m 33 weeks with our second, and over the past couple of weeks, my usually confident three year old has been suffering with crippling separation anxiety. Doesn’t want to go to nursery, swimming lessons, Nanny’s house, anywhere without me. All the things he used to love! Is this likely to be in relation to the impending arrival and what can I do to make him feel more reassured that I’m not going anywhere! Has anyone else had this with subsequent pregnancies?

Yes we’re going through this atm. From what I was reading it’s normal and hard to avoid in the third trimester. Our bodies start releasing a hormone that our children are attracted to which can make them more clingy. My daughter doesn’t want to go to nursery and things either but a few weeks earlier, we used to get told off if we picked her up early as she was busy having fun. We’ve not found anything that completely solves it. My daughter is happy going to things if I reassure her it won’t be long until she sees me again and we now have cuddles multiple times a day whereas before she was too busy for me

From 33 weeks women produce extra oxytocin (the love hormone) that younger kids can sense . Making them extra clingy ….. i had the sad thing with my eldest and did some research and that is what i found x

My 3 year old has been clingier and grumpier this week too. It’s exhausting and really plays on my already short temper 🙈. I just try to take lots of breaks when I can.

Thank you - it’s reassuring to hear that I’m not alone on this. Heartbreaking to see them so upset going into nursery etc though!!!

My daughter is 6 and is still having moments of this. In fact my 9 year old went to cub camp this weekend and had to come home because he was home sick after night 1, which is really unlike him. So I’d say it’s all normal no matter what the age 😀
