Dream Feeds

My LO is 5 months and still has a dream feed around 10.30/11pm ish. He is usually fast asleep but the nappy change before hand does wake him up a little and he’s not a happy one and usually starts crying. Then it’s a race to quickly get him changed and give him the milk which he knows is coming then is happy and will then doze off on bottle then will fall asleep. I have skipped the dream feed once but that’s when we where abroad and getting up at 5am so he had a feed immediately then. So that was all ok and he was happy. Has anyone given up dream feeds permanently? Reason for asking as he’s gets so aggy being woken up and shouts but I know it’s because he’s tired. So just wondering and if so what’s your feeding/bedtime routine? 😊

Does he need a nappy change when he gets the dream feed? The whole point of a dream feed is for them to eat in their sleep.

@Charlotte yes as it’s always full. We’ve left it a few times and he then wakes during the night as it’s uncomfortable or it’s ended up leaking through then he’s wide awake. We are using premium nappies. We have always done it like this and he sleeps through the night till 8ish sometimes 9ish. I couldn’t bare to leave him in the same nappy for that long 😖

You could try going up a nappy size at night to keep him dry for longer. I haven’t changed my LOs nappy at night for at least 2 months (unless she wakes and poos), she is also 5 months. As for dream feeds I breastfeed and just pop her on asleep and put her down again. Then again we are still in sleep regression, so we get 0-5 wakes a night.

You could also look into night nappies to reduce overnight changes? I found going up a size as my LO was sort of between 2 sizes reduced the need for overnight changes. I got told by the doctor to not wake a sleeping baby and go by their cues of when they’re hungry also. You could also ask your doctor if you could add some baby cereal to the milk for the bed time feed so it keeps their tummy full!

We stopped attempting dream feeds early on because they’d always wake him up, and actually re-set his sleep / awake cycle. Only changing nappies if actively dirty too as otherwise it’s a whole palava. As ‘bad’ as it may feel to us, remember nappies are actively designed to hold pee for a long period so it’s unlikely your little one will be bothered by it x

Don’t change him unless he’s done a poo, size up or use a pull up nappy (we use pampers size 3 pull ups and find they are more absorbent). If you think of babies sleeping 12+ hours a night straight through they aren’t being changed
