Dropping percentile

My LO just had his 6 weeks check up and he's dropped a percentile. The Dr suspects it could be his "slight" tongue tie, which we knew he had from the start but never affected him until now since the weight drop and I'm having during BF (didn't have pain before). Can babies latch change over time? Or could the cause of the weight drop be something else?

my LO has dropped a percentile and I am bottle feeding and she's having an average of 24oz every 24 hours. Dropped told me she was overfeeding previously so cut her food down a bit and now she's dropped. feel like we can't win Tbh

@Gemma ah how annoying! If they're hungry they eat, if they're full, they're full! My LO unlatches when he's full and there's no way to know how much he intakes. I think you're right, we can't win!

We're going through similar but nearly 8 weeks. We struggled with weight gain in the first 3 weeks due to a slight tongue tie so I ended up combi feeding. Decided to leave the tongue tie as she was comfortable with our routine and no issues. These past couple of weeks she's struggling with latching on the bottle sometimes and the health visitor did say to me it could become more of an obvious issue around the 6 week mark so to keep an eye on it. We've dropped a centile and have now been referred to the infant feeding team to assess the tongue tie properly x

@Kirsty thank you! Our HV just kept telling us to ask our Dr and our Dr didn't know why the HV wouldn't just refer us herself. But neither mentioned it could be an issue around now. I've had to try different positions for our latch and it's helped a bit. I'll just keep an eye on his weight over the next few weeks until we have our tongue tie appt.

snip the tongue tie

@Gemma I was told the exact same thing about over feeding, have you gone back to just feeding on demand? I tried cutting my LO back for a day and she was miserable so just ended up ignoring advice. Have a feeling the HV I spoke to would have a fit at how much she’s been drinking the last few days due to her growth spurt!

@Callie yes I'm going back to feeding on demand. then I'm going to re weigh her in 2 weeks to see how she goes. The only problem is my LO doesn't seem to stop when feeding, so don't know where the line is.

I must admit our HV team have been great and really knowledgeable on it all. The same day I mentioned the issues they made the referral and the appointment was booked for next week. Good luck! X

@Gemma mine can be exactly the same!! Her feedings a mess atm due to the 6 week growth spurt but I decided to trial giving her a slightly longer burp break after 100-120ml to see if she then wanted to carry on. Our main issue is she’s hungry every 1.5-2 hours unless contact napping on me where she will go 3-4 hours 😅

Ignore health visitors they all have different opinions. It can be dangerous

I don't know about latches changing over time. I know your nipples can though!! My right one went from needing a massive flange to a tiny one when pumping. That could affect the latch I guess?

Mine dropped from the 9th percentile to the 2nd in weight but is still gaining weight. We were just told to go for weekly weigh ins to keep an eye on it but they didn't seem too concerned as she is still gaining weight.
