Tip and pay by card

We're new to Canada. There are 2 specific everyday situations that keep occurring and we are not sure what the right way of saying/answering it is. 1.) At the restaurant, asked for the bill, now you want to tip your waitress, what do you say so she will put the tip on the amount before you give her your credit card? Like the exact words. 2.) Paying at the store. Cashier says the amount, what is the correct and polite way of saying you want to pay by card (or cash)? Thanks for your help 😬

For 1, they normally give you the machine that may give their tip options, it's what I always see when I go to a restaurant For 2, depending on their machine, they may need to press the button of what specific card will be used "debit/interac", or "credit", or "cash". Simple and straight to the point to get through the tills

@Wynona ok so for 1 I don't say anything about a tip and just wait until I get the machine and select an option? Do all machines have that? And for 2 so just basically a one word answer like debit or credit is considered enough?

Yes, with 1, majority of restaurants have the tip option on their machine, you can also leave an extra bill when you pay with cash at a restaurant, too 😊 And it is a simple word answer with the cashier, to let them know 😊

Just about all machines have the tip option; however, sometimes tapping your card will bypass the tip option so if you want to tip, make sure you always insert the card to be safe. For the type of payment, usually saying cash, debit or credit is enough. The odd store needs to know the type of credit card (ie: Mastercard vs Visa) but the majority just need to know it’s credit.

You can say proactively: 1.Plz add 15% tip. ( Or whatever you deem appropriate based on service ) 2. Visa plz. OR It will be cash plz.

In addition to what everyone has said, sometimes it's better to pay tips in cash since this goes directly to the server and not the restaurant

Thanks 🙋‍♀️👍

@Maryam would you leave it at the table or hand it to them right after paying?

You can do either. I usually just hand it to them when I'm paying with my card
