Although we did discuss the future of our children’s names I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Kids will be kids and if it’s not your name they can find a way to mock they will pick something else like your hair colour, glasses and/or incident that happens at school etc. It’s unavoidable I think you just need to make your kid resilient so they aren’t bullied. Unless the name is mega outlandish I don’t think it would massively affect employment into adulthood and they can prove themselves through qualifications and the interview. Plus with all the names floating around these days I don’t you’d stand out haha
We have Nevaeh and Aurelia Love Aurora, Avery, Aubrey Tristan and Eli for a boy
I agree with husband. Would never give a book/TV series name to my kid. If the name however sounds "normal" I would. My son's name is Artur, a mix between Arthur and Arturo. If it's something like this, minimal and easy to pronounce yes. Is it's something coming from games of thrones for example an absolute no for me
Yes I really liked the name Alexa but of course Amazon ruined that. You would never be able to call out her name at home without the Amazon Alexa piping up. Or give Alexa a command without your daughter thinking you are talking to her
@Alessia We actually named our twins Jaehaerys (Jah-Harrys) and Nymeria (Nah-Mer-Ah) from the Game of Thrones series. lol Their father and I have unique names too that no one heard of when we were growing up so we felt empowered giving them names unlikely heard of by anyone else too. There are so many unique names nowadays that I just went with what i knew would be as unique as them. Also, it’s not hard to learn the pronunciation of a name. As a previous middle school teacher, unique names are in every classroom.
@McKenna after 10 years people I work with still can't pronounce my name so well... All is relative. But I said I would not put one those name, everyone is free to do what they want. I'm more concerned about purposeful mispronunciation than by mistake. I would not burden my kids with it, but that's me
@Alessia I was just saying it was funny you mentioned the specific show we named them after. I don’t have an opinion around your comment other than that. As you said to each their own so everything past my first sentence was for the original poster, not to spark debate with you over. Sorry if it came off that way!
I have a Lorenzo and Maria Margarita. Both Spanish catholic saint names. I’ve been told by a few people (without asking them) that they dislike the name margarita because it reminds them of alcohol which.. baffles me but I let it kind of go.. many people say that it’ll cause problems since the names will be hard to pronounce for many people, but that’s just life.. my name is Kianna and people somehow mispronounce my name all the time. I stopped caring. It shouldn’t be that deep for others.
When I think of unique names I still think of actual names. Not like objects or just words? like if I met someone named Locket or Blue or cable or Coin like stupid names id be turned off even if its not my child id still feel bad for the person cuz they didnt get to choose to be named Malibu Barbie 😃 as long as it sounds like a name a has a good meaning to it then it shouldn’t be a problem!
I have always used the phrase “You’re not naming a baby, you’re naming an adult.” Or “Business Card Name.” I don’t judge anyone naming their own baby because it’s THEIR own baby. But I like to take into consideration nicknames/ shorter versions of the name/ teasing because before they become an adult kids can be cruel too lol.
I work at a university and saw a student with the legal name “Glacier” the other day.
Car names I find facetious sorry, you are judged on your Resume/CV in moments. I'm not saying we should use traditional names.....that would be a snooze. We eat apples not birth them, Tranquility doesn't guarantee peace, a Porsche won't make life any quicker. I don't want to see heaven spelt backwards anymore.

Maybe it’s me but I feel like children are less judgmental of names now than they used to be because there is a larger variety of common names now. It’s also important for everyone to teach their children not to laugh at others or make fun of them because of their name. It’s a quick conversation about names and an ongoing conversation to make sure your child is being kind to others.

My son we named Abundance and sister Journey (unique where we are originally from but a little more popular where we live now)
I have met little boys called Orion & Asterix. I quite like the name Orion for a boy now but not really keen on Asterix.
people have unique names and always have. i don't get why full grown ass adults are scared of their kid being bullied when bullies don't give a damn and will target someone regardless of their name. the only thing i fussed about with mine was making sure it was spelled/pronounced phonetically since it is already unconventional. His name probably would have been weirder if i had him now vs 3 years ago lmao
Key & Peele also showed us in 2012 that even basic names can be mispronounced 🤣🤣 https://youtu.be/Dd7FixvoKBw?si=5rsqc9MfUSpZ0wEd
My baby is Kaia which I’ve found to be pretty unique. Sometimes when people ask her name and I say it they have a double take and ask how it’s spelled and pronounce it back wrong (it rhymes with Maya, it’s not that hard), but to be honest that’s pretty much only old people. I think nowadays there are wayyy more unique names and it’s totally fine to an extent
We named my son Caellum. While unique, I couldn't think of any horrible nicknames/teasing points but we did think about it before deciding on the name!
