Breastfeeding with Breast Implants

I have under the muscle breast implants which I had done in 2017. And just wondering if anyone else with under muscle implants has been able to express colostrum and breastfeed? My incision is under the breast. I’m on day 2 of trying to express colostrum but nothing is coming out. I know they say not to, but a minuscule drop will come out only if I press on the nipple itself, but nothing if I press on the milk glands at the edge of the areola. So I’m worried that I may not be able to produce milk :( Ugh I would really love to breastfeed and this is starting to make me really sad 😞

Hi are you still pregnant and nearly due or had baby already? I’ve had an implant and uplift 2 years ago. I can’t remember if my surgeon said he done under or over the muscle but he did tell me when having implants breastfeeding wouldn’t be an issue. I’m leaking as of now an quite a bit will come out if I squeeze but I’m only 33 weeks so don’t really wanna express yet as it can bring on early labour. Did you have your nipple sewn back on at all or just complete implants as the only way you wouldn’t be able to produce milk with implants is if your nerves have not connected to your nipples properly but if your nipples haven’t been touched and it’s just a straight in implant you should be fine? Your body just might not be producing enough ‘yet’ but should defiantly come xxx

I have breast implants over the muscle and didnt manage to get any colostrum prior to my baby being born, but as soon as he was born it came out and he was able to breastfeed fine. Still going at 5 months PP. They told me having breast implants should not impact bfeeding unless maybe your incision is around the areola which can have an impact sometimes x

Expressing colostrum prior to birth is not an indication of your ability to breastfeed. Most implants do not affect the breast tissue and should not interfere with breastfeeding. However that's not guaranteed and it depends if there is any scarring or damage. I would recommend finding some skilled support now, so you are prepared once baby is here (I recommend this to anyone wishing to breastfeed! Early support is SO important) https://laleche.org.uk/find-lll-support-group/

Hey!! I’m currently 37 weeks pregnant, had first boob job 14 years ago and a second boob job last year, both under the muscle. I started trying to express some colostrum a few days ago and the first few times had zero joy so thought the same. I have now been able to get a couple of syringes but same as you, I have to press on the edge of my areola to get any, it just doesn’t work for me to press further out from the areola. I’m just going with it and seeing how much I can get pre birth. It’s not painful so to speak, just a bit “uncomfy” more cos I’ve got hyper sensitive nipples post boob job!!! Maybe it’s a boob job thing to only be able to get it with more pressure on the edge of the areola, who knows! 😂 I’d defo say try doing it at night as I get more at night, and also after a nice warm shower and give your boobs a really good massage in the shower. Light a candle, chilled music, dim lit room, really try to chill out and it should come xxx

@Kia hey x yeah I’m still pregnant. 38 weeks now so I thought I would try expressing colostrum. My incision was done under my breast so no interference with my nipples. Might just have to keep trying and see what happens x

@Beth my incision is under the breast so no interference with the nipple. How did you know your colostrum was coming out after baby was born? Can you feel the milk coming out when you breastfeed? X

@Charlotte yes my friend couldn’t get any colostrum before her baby was born and then had so much milk afterwards. I just really wanted to get some so it’s disappointing lol. I will check out the website, thank you x

@Alison oh really, that’s great that you’re getting some now! How many days did it take? Strange isn’t it. I mean there’s hots be something in there if a tiny bit is coming out when I press my nipple 😂 I will just have to keep trying. Will try after a shower today, thank you x

It took me 2 but I think I was also being quite impatient, it’s taking me 35-45 mins to get 1 ml out, I get it on a spoon first then suck it up into the syringe! Persevere and just find your own technique! Xxxx

Baby latched as soon as he was born and breastfed since then, but hsd to express some colostrum the first night after he was born as he was too sleepy to latch and I was able to expres colostrum then when I had struggled prior to birth. Crazy how the body changes eh!

When you have your midwife visits they will offer to help support/supervise a feed. They can show you what to look for with baby swallowing to make sure they are getting what they need from you, you can see their little cheeks move.you may also feel your letdowns

@Alison I’m on day 3. And I was able to get a little bit this morning yay!!!! 🥳 will keep trying to everyday and hopefully have a good enough stash before baby comes 🥰

@Beth aaawwwww bless him! It is honestly so crazy that are bodies can even do all this! Never fails to amaze me x

@Beth I will keep that in mind thank you. Will deffo be asking them for as much help as I can get x

Thank you all so much for your help and advice!! Perked me up a little and I was able to harvest some colostrum this morning. The warm shower and massage definitely helped! 🥰
